Okay, what is Alpina? Is this a German aftermarket company that modifies BMWs? I realize this is probably akin to a Mustang guy asking what Shelby or Saleen is.

Alpina is the oldest (since 1961), biggest BMW tuner in the world, comparable to AMG on mercedes benz! They have the best connections to BMW itself.

A tuner?

This is directly from their site: "ALPINA, a small but enterprising automotive manufacturer."

Exactly. Alpina is NOT a tuner but a manufacturer. You can being your E90 to Alpina and offer them all the money in the world, they still won´t make an Alpina of it. An Alpina is allways born as an Alpina. In fact, even the vehicle registration carries the Alpina name. Not a word about BMW.

They used to state, they could also build an Alpina based on a Merc or Audi. But simply didn´t see the point. To make the very best, you better start with the best and improve. No point in starting with the second best.

They do sell a few aftermarket parts such as wheels and aero kits. But that won´t make your car an Alpina. Just a BMW with some Alpina parts...
