N55 Manual Transmission Question
Hey, quick question...
I have a 2011 N55 MT and just hit 8k miles. Ive noticed a bit of a wiggle in the gearshifter and didnt think much of it, but now its kinda bugging me. What I mean is the up and down wiggle (eg: 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 4th). Lets say I engage 4th gear, release the clutch and drive normal. I am able to wiggle the gearstick up and down atleast .60 to .80 of an inch up and down, without pressing the cluth still in gear, not actually shifting. Is this normal?? Im used to some play in cars being over 100k miles thats normal. but this?? Took her to the dealer and the tech said it has quite a bit more play than normal, but is not defective so no warranty fix. Can future damages occur? Just accept? PS I live in germany. Dealers different ![]() Thank you |

do you do lots of hard downshifts? rest your hand on the knob while in gear? it sounds like the syncros may be prematurely worn. there was a gent on this forum not too long ago who would always downshift to third when he would pass people and ended up doing it so hard so often he wore out the 3rd gear syncros.

No, not that I know. This applies to all gears, was just an example. Hand and foot only touch stuff when shifting. I rarely feel the need to downshift in this car.I did think it was me for a minute, but Ive had other cars, and this never happend. My E46 325i got up to 180k miles before this kind of wobble

I would take it in and show the shop foreman what you are talking about. This doesn't sound normal to me. Mine has no wiggle on my 6MT.
Perhaps the plastic cup" (#9) that the shift arm sits in has broken apart. Or one of the yellow washers for the shift linkage have come off or is missing. On older BMW's #14 part seems to wearout first - giving you lots of "shifter slop". |
