Went driving at 11pm last night - still can't stop smiling

Last night I was pacing the house, was under 100km before the car was considered to be properly run in, and I thought - what the heck let's clock up a few more k's...

The map below shows my favourite road to drive on - Gorge Rd going through some of the most picturesque parts of the Adelaide Hills, and only 10 minutes drive from where I live.

Yesterday was 38 deg C (100.4 deg F) during the day, and the night was a nice cool 26C (79F), perfect for a night drive. Like a sneaky school boy I get into the car and the smell of the leather is a thrill this late at night, and I hear the familiar sound of the steering lock disengage. She springs to life as I press START, and I immediately switch off the stereo and climate control I don't want any interference between me and that engine on this mission.

So I take her out, and warm her up a bit, then start to push a little more with each corner to see where the limits are. Awsome! Sunroof open so that I can hear that gorgeous 6 doing its thang and feel the rush of air.

It is pitch black, no street lights here, just my adaptive xenons on hi beam to light up proceedings - I feel like I am the only person left alive in the world, there are no other cars in my way. Accentuating this feeling, Gorge Road hugs a sheer cliff face and is cut into the rock, so I open the passenger's window which is facing the cliff face and the sound of the engine is bouncing back into the cabin of the otherwise quiet car...

So I am hearing this great howl under the bonnet, and can't decide if I like 2nd or 3rd gear better. 2nd is explosive and the tacho needle just rips over like there is nothing in it's way and sounds like the devil himself is chasing me, but 3rd is a nice shove of creamy, seductive acceleration that just reels in the scenery and before I know it I am down shifting again to take the next 30km/h bend at 70km/h. The engine is so elastic - it feels like bungee jumping, and the smooth metal of the gear lever feels sensual in the palm of my hand and I am in complete control of this glorious engine.

It is corner after on-camber corner, I can feel the wind and hear the whistling of the foliage above me through the sunroof. Hearing the engine at full song for the first time is awsome and I am an instant adict to the rush and grinning like a loon.

You’re making me think about leaving NYC/NJ and moving back to upstate NY where I’d have similar experiences driving everyday. Instead of being stuck in traffic with people beeping all the time.

... sounds like cheating behind someone's back.. but I do agree Jamie, I do the same thing on a Saturday night on George Washington Memorial Parkway, me and E90stress, in manual mode, sunroof open, windows close, and sometimes the sound of Iron Butterfly's Ina Gada Da Vida in full blast.
...There are still somethings in life that are free.

Reminded me of a memorable time in my old 2002tii, about 6:00AM, after a marathon drive from Michigan down to the Florida keys, crossing over the 7-mile bridge at 100+mph with my brother as co-pilot, two windsurf boards on top, smell of salty ocean air, and UB-40 on the stereo.

Life is good sometimes. And more often to those of us in bimmers...

Take the car up 208 to Franklin Lakes area, it's nice over there.

I bring my bike there all the time, no lightss plenty of turns, etc.

Nice write up Jamie.. Very detailed and i can actually sense the thrill in your voice just reading it.

Sometimes i purposely get lost or take the longer roads.. and its best when its in the middle of the night.

I’ve been thinking about finding a spot to take a road trip to, I’ll have to check that out. I’ve heard that area is nice.
