Considering Joining the Club

Hey New England,

Im considering an off-warranty 135i with 50k miles exactly. The price I feel is fair at 24k and includes an extra set of wheels w/ snows. Being a relatively temperamental engine would you guys avoid an off-warranty 135 like to plague or with confirmation of the HPFP recall and up-to-date maintenance take a chance? I would likely choose to have to car serviced at a reputable non-BMW mechanic, do any of you have any suggestions in the Boston area? I would also consider paying a tech for their time to review the car prior to my purchase.

I understand that this is subject to opinions and it is ultimately my decision. Basically Im curious about maintenance experiences for their 1s outside of the BMW service department.

Thank you,
Mike

My 135 has 90k miles and haven't had costly issues (knock on wood!). I think if it's up to date, you'll be fine taking it to BMW-specialist (I use 3D in Hudson, NH). Good luck with the decision!

i will say that initially i saw a lot of posts about HPFP failure etc, and saw several friends run into trouble. i had my pump replaced once...last year IIRC. but recently, i've seen/heard a lot less about the whole issue. maybe people just aren't posting about it, but i'm inclined/hopeful to think that the most recent version of the HPFP is actually better

i think if you have the car gone through by someone who really knows their stuff, it'd be worth it. i can recommend someone...are you actually in boston or outside the city?

the price seems about right, especially given a second set of wheels.

was the car a lease or was it owned? I'm always apprehensive of buying previously leased cars. i just don't think people are as careful with a car they know they're only going to have for 2 years

other things to check closely:

-coilpacks (i had one fail around 40k miles)
-spark plugs (service interval is 45k miles IIRC)
-dashboard rattles (if you care about that kind of stuff)
-tail light seals (there was a recall)
-3rd brake light (prone to cracking. i've gone through 3. there's a service bulletin that details a little grinding work to a a small tab. apparently this wasn't done for my first 2 replacements, and you can see the issue persisted. i had that work done a few months ago, no issues yet. but IIRC some people have never run into the lens cracking)
-headlight mounting clips (inboard side, above the lens. black plastic triangle-shaped mounting clips are prone to cracking, allowing the headlight to dip a little. i think i have a picture of mine broken. dealer replaced the whole lens/cover assembly under warranty)

hope i haven't completely scared you off

The HPFP is now warrantied until 10 years or 120K miles and this extension is transferable to subsequent owners.

Unfortunately, it's just the pumps -- the warranty on the other fuel system components affected by the N54 recall have not been extended. Ideally you would have receipts (records can be accessed by BMW with vin) to verify you have the latest injectors, ignition coils, etc.

If you are north of Boston, I would check out Schneller or Turner. I had a pre-purchase inspection done at Schneller a few years ago for an E46 Touring I bought and it was worth the ~$250 (and this car had all records since new).

I think you'll get different opinions depending on who you ask. Mike Miller (techtalk@roundel.org) of Roundel/Bimmer magazines is relatively negative about owning newer BMWs off warranty, and especially pessimistic about the problematic N54. He's probably represents one extreme, but I'm sure there are many others on here (like Rachel) that have not had any significant issues running many miles post warranty.

Right now I'm somewhere in the middle. My '09 has 11K miles and I bought it earlier this year with 4K miles (and exceptional care/service). I've had three problems with the car misfiring bad and throwing codes (CEL) that required me to take it to the dealer immediately. Each time the diagnosis was different, but ultimately BMW NA approved all new injectors, even though I had the latest part number injectors. Hopefully that cures the problem.

So my long term view on the N54 is wait and see. As I approach 50K (or 2013, whatever comes first), I'll make a decision (keep it, purchase extended warranty, sell it).

Good luck with your decision.

Hey all,

Thank you for your advice! I picked her up last night. These are the shops photos. I had to break out the new ice scraper for my first day with her this morning!! If the weather's nice this weekend I'll try to add some photos.

Congrats. I bought my 1 brand new. Only had the hpfp issue once and that's pretty much it. I also have a lot more power mods then any other local 1 that I know of with no issues at 46k miles. With that said, I recommend a jb4 lol

Curious where you bought it? I'm looking around in southern NH and Mass and would like to hear your experience. Nice car....love the saddle interior!

I found it at Beverly Farms Motors in Beverly MA. Experience has been positive so far. Put the snowshoes on a few weeks ago haven't needed to use them yet!!

I was in the market for about 6 months before I found this one. I had an autotrader search agent that sent me e-mail alerts whenever a new one showed up.

I've been to the Bev. Farm Motors site in the past. They seem to get some interesting cars there. Thanks for the info
