Sebring Track Time - 01/12/12
So I came down to race in a 6 hour night enduro and decided to drive the 1M with the instructors to get more seat time for the race. My first time out on the track was the night before (in the race car) but I've been looking at in car video, data, and playing some Forza 4 to get the track in my head. Nothing really prepared me for the tracks character flaws so I'm glad I did the DE.
Our end result in the race last night was 1st out of 15 cars in class, 7th overall out of 50, and we were the leading BMW so the weekend couldn't have been better. I cut a right rear tire at 90+ mph entering T1 near the end of my stint but avoided hitting a wall by about 15 ft. I limped the car back at 20-60 mph, got the wheel replaced, and got back out for the remaining 20 minutes. We held the position but lost about 1 minute of time. We ended with a 4 lap lead over 2nd place. But back to the 1M.... Below is the first session out. This starts after my warm up lap. I had MDM on and M off for first session and then shut everything off for the 2nd. It's uploading now but it may be later today before I can post it up. The car handled the bumps at Sebring extremely well with the Motons on nearly full soft but I have an 11+ hour drive home so I needed to preserve my (stock) tires, a little. I've got to get back to the paddock so I'll get back the the thread later. Cheers, Dan

Dan, congratulations on your race results! A win in such a huge class is quite impressive. Also, thanks for the 1M footage--you passed a lot of high dollar cars, including a prototype. I guess the Motons got quite a workout with the bumps. Nice job.

Great footage Dan. Nice lines the car seems very neutral. What pads are u now running? How often was the traction control kicking in? Looking forward to seeing the next vid with everything off. Love seeing 1M being properly used. Can't wait to take mine out to play in the spring. I've been tracking MINIs for the last 10 years, it's going to be fun going back to rwd. The little time I had at the nurburgring during my ED was such a tease.
Cheers Amit

Congrats on the class win Dan!
Looking forward to the 1M footage when I get home.

Dan, congrats on the class win. What class were you running? What CR class would the car have been? E36?
The head mounted camera really makes you "feel" how bumpy Sebring is. |

Pads are Performance Friction 01's. Aggressive and obnoxious when cold but they will give you a nose bleed when up to temp.
I've heard about bumpy Sebring but had no idea. The Motons soaked it up and I barely made any adjustments from street settings. The race car was a 2.5 e36 sedan with JRZ DA's and a very good setup. We had a great crew and my codriver has a lot of experience at Sebring so I had to step up my game. The class was R7 with PBOC. Their classifications are a bit confusing but the car is a JS class car with BMW Club Racing. I'll post some race action here if anyone is interested. I had a GT3 blow it's engine about 2 car lengths in front of me that nearly put me in a wall also. Here's the biggest "code brown" moment I've had. I can now check off "cut tire in the worst place and didn't crash" section of my resume.

Congratulations on the win and thanks for the videos. These are probably best track shootage of the 1Ms together with Advevo's fantastic videos, you both make me feel envious and a bit embarrassed as well
I would like to see more of this kind of videos from other owners who have extensive track experience like Mdorphin and M3Adjuster for example, common guys, this is great fun! |

Dan, what settings did you prefer for the track? MDM and M mode OFF or all off?

I was using the Hero 2 as well. Nice camera! They really simplified the menus.
What settings did I prefer... All off, once I got used to the car on Sebring. The race car and the 1M were so different that I thought I should leave something on for the 1st session. I got the ABS to intervene in the braking zone of the hairpin a few times near the end of my 3rd session. I had to stand on them hard but it was good to get a feel for it. I'm finally home! 1900 miles in the 1M and it ran like a top. It really was a comfortable road trip, especially considering how well it was on track. 11K miles on the odometer and I'm thinking PSS's will go on after the wheels are powder coated (Carrera Silver).

Here's a screenshot from a fast lap using Traqmate. I'd like to compare it with a 1M on sticky tires vs. the stock ones! 133-135 seems to be the consistent top speed at the end of the back straight.
This is what it's like to race a 190 hp car with prototypes on track:
