I was helping a 335 owner install my old v2 dpfix in his car and noticed that you can still bolt the filter on both ends. It should be secure and is very lightweight. Losing the end cover over the ECU would be a little disappointing. The other issue will be securing the wires held by the front of the cross bracket. I think I'll just ziptie these wires to the two brackets off the bottom of the filter and make this mod. Should save 9 lbs from the front which I can use. Seems goofy for so little weight gain but every little bit adds up.

We just pulled the window glass, motor, regulator/window cable rails and sound deadening from one door and it was 14 lbs. together.

So for the 2 sides, we'll loose 28 lbs.

i forgot the exact weights, but the stock clutch and flywheel weighed about 40# and a spec flywheel and 3+ clutch weighed just under 20. so a 20# weight loss, not bad.

come on, lets try to keep this thread up guys!

I'm thinking of getting one of those 12lb braille batteries. i think the stock battery weighs 50-60 lbs. not bad for ~150 bucks.

at 22lbs it sounds single sided.

cf hood

the cf hood was from VIS Racing
I bought the hood from a 1addicts member.
However, i think you're right it's probably a single sided.
According to VIS Racing they use an under layer which is probably not cf.

you're correct, theirs is a single layer.

Thanks for sharing, how do you like the fit and finish of the hood? I was curious about these hoods, except i wanted a double layer, but they are hard to find in the style I'm looking for.

Report back if you try the braille... curious how long the car can sit with one of those. Thanks.

Honestly, I'd recommend getting a trickle charger, or install a battery switch.

also, depending what year your car is, make sure you have a way in and out of the trunk when you disconnect the battery, they took out the trunk key on some of the more recent models and people have locked themselves out completely.

even with the stock battery, the BMWs have so many electronic systems that the battery really doesn't last long.

haha, that's one of the reasons chose the one i did when i was looking at used ones... mine was an early build date 09, so strangely it has all the 08 pieces, but an 09 build date.

I believe there's another Braille battery that is only about 2-3lbs more meant more for street use as the 12lb one is more recommended for race due to it's charge holding abilities, or lack of...

Depending what sort of climate you're in, you might have issues if you have a cold morning and such.

Just some food for thought. I was debating doing an Optima in my car, I've had one in every other car I've owned, and they are still less then half the size of the BMW battery, but still well up into the 20lbs range.

I plan to continue decreasing the weight of my car by replacing stock parts that need replacing with lighter aftermarket pieces. For sure I'll do a 20 lb or so battery in a few years. Next will probably be lighter brake rotors. If I ever get any hood or trunk damage for sure I'll go to a CF replacement.

The one part I want that will be very unlikely to ever be needed to replace a worn stock part is I want a CF sunroof panel to replace the glass. I'm broke now so I don't plan any mods anytime soon.

other replacement things you can do, all the M3 control arms and etc, all about 1-2lbs less then stock, but also have harder bushing, makes a big difference in the feel of the car and some to handling.

Just a consideration if you're going to be doing that much work over time.

Here's a related battery question/request.

Some night when you have a few minutes, and you want an excuse to relish in the beauty that is the 1, and the fact you get to own one, go sit in yours in the garage. Make a note of the time, and with the headlight switch on auto, turn the car on (not engine), and turn the radio up to a decent listening volume and enjoy some tunes while flipping through the owners manual.

How long before you get the low battery symbol and the car shuts off?

I need to time mine, but it doesn't seem to be longer than about 20 minutes. The car does still start after that, but it won't let me keep the car turned on and shows a low battery symbol.

not long......

I've replaced a battery, pleaded like hell with the dealership to do it too (was on a road trip and didn't trust it)

a ferry ride that took an hour, I ran the radio for about 25 minutes with the headlights off, no interior lights, and no angels on (double checked) I became worried and chickened out knowing if it didn't start there would be 100 angry cars behind me

sadly, it barely started. And i mean barely. when i did try to start the car, low charge light came one for a second and it hesitated badly.

I also sat in the car for 20 minutes while someone was coding my car, it barely started that time too and had the charge light come up. Dealership found nothing wrong with my battery.

I straight up asked "so, if i were to take a date to the drive in movies, would i be better off in my car or my jeep?"

They laughed and said, "there's still drive in movies??? Definitely take the jeep, don't even think twice, you won't be leaving the parking lot!"

Just an FYI, for every 10 lbs of rotating mass shaven off will result in being .1 faster in the 1/4 as the same with the 100lbs loss mentioned early in this thread.

But I really wouldn't see any problems getting the car close to 3k lbs. As long as people can contribute the weight of what they were taking off and replaced it with.

This thread really went to shit. can we get a mod to clean all of the "non-tech" posts from this "tech" thread?
