Stolen 1M
My 6 month old AW 1M was stolen from my drive last night. Despite my best attempts to deter them, with CCTV and a house alarm, they managed to steal it in just under 3 minutes at 2am.
Luckily the CCTV caught them, the Police now have it so fingers crossed. Just really to let you all know how they did it. BMW have identified a 'black spot' in the car's alarm on the inside of the car. Apparently this is on the passenger side, but on the 1M it appears to be on the driver side. They smashed a small area of the driver door glass near to the wing mirror, put their hand down to the ECU in the footwell (in the black spot) then plugged in a device that can then 're-program' ANY BMW keyfob with the Radio Frequency of the car they are stealing and make that key the car key. One of them then got in the car, released the handbrake and three of them pushed it off the drive and down the road where I guess they started it and hopefully wrapped themselves around a tree and slowly killed them in a fireball. On the plus side I have GAP insurance, and also a set of brand new Michelin Pilot Super Sports for the rear so if anyone wants to brighten my week and buy them off me for what I paid (£600) please PM me. Hope you all enjoy yours as much as I did mine. 6 months of pure pleasure, I wont be buying another as It will just happen again, so until I have the house in the country with a garage, I wont be buying another! |

Sorry to hear what happened. Thankfully the police have the video, maybe the damage won't be too bad. Please say the thieves were also caught and will be under going slow painful torture soon.

Very sad to hear that! Good to know about the issue around the alarm. Might be an idea to but a GPS/radio device in the car well hidden somewhere...

Dude, sorry to hear that Hopefully karma catches up to those bastards
When you said they plugged in to the ECU I'm assuming you mean the OBD port correct?

This is why i got the lojack early detection system for my car. Its a really nice system and the car would have definitely been found if you had it.

Yeah I assume it was some sort of port/interface down the Right hand side of the car, either in the footwell or by the light control? Any ideas?
Apparently the device they plug in can re-program any key and is available for £300 on the internet. I didn't bother with a tracker, I don't want it back if some scumbag has driven it, plus im pretty sure it then goes down as a CAT with the DVLA so it shows as a stolen recovered? Any clarification on that? |

Holy that's kinda scary Dack!
Makes me wonder which would be better, installing a GPS tracker or just relocating the OBD port

is there any way of safeguarding the port? like maybe putting a secure cover over it? out of curiosity where is it - footwell or further up? They didnt seem to lean in too far to get to it.
I got a great CCTV video from it, as soon as I have it back ill post it up here if thats possible. |

Sorry to hear. It's terrible how they managed to steal it without too much hassle. You could technically complain to BMW at how it was so easy to steal the car without the keys and that their security system is simply inadequate.

The OBD-II port is just above the hood pull handle. Its easiest to see when the door is open, but an expert can acess it with the door closed - as you know. |

Post more information about your car ( photos, colour, wheel type)
And spam to every local & state BMW board. Mirracles have happened, these cars are easy to spot. Hope your car finds you soon. As far as OBD port im thinking of putting a metal plate on 4 hex(or some other rare skrew head) over the area to offer at least some resistance that could trigger the motion detector for the alarm.
