Does anyone else have this happen with their key fob?

Alright, so I don't put the keyfob in the slot that often, before I type out the rest, I do have comfort access if this matters.

I usually leave the fob in my pocket or jacket pocket and sometimes when I go up to the car and touch the handle it won't unlock or lock until I shake the jacket pocket to move the fob around and then it will work. So weak signal I assume.

If I get in the car and turn it on though, it won't show the battery and key symbol as if it was low (it does but not all the time).

This happens with BOTH of my keyfobs (keep in mind I've only had the car for 1 year (almost). I put the fob in the slot in the car once and was on the highway for an hour, after I got out, I heard the chime and saw on my dash the key and battery symbol AGAIN right before locking the door. It is kind of annoying.

Do I need to replace the battery in both of them? Can I even do this? Will the key have to be reprogrammed?

Thanks.

Yep, replace the batteries, they last about a year and don't cost much.

This is a well know problem with many of the new cars including BMWs. If you find yourself in a similar situation, with a low key fob battery in your pocket, here's how to get it working again:

I had my prius for 2 years now and never have single problem with that. How come the battery on BMW key fob is junk?

Do not want to hijack this fine thread but would you tell me how the CA key FOB works? When you exit the car do you press a button to lock the car? I know that you can open it just by touching the door handle. Your assistance is appreciated.

FWIW, the battery in the key fob of our other car (not BMW, but with comfort access-like feature) just died. The car was 2 years and 2 months old and the primary driver's key died. My key (which I don't use often) still seems strong.

Just touch the "ridges" on the top of the door handle.
Did they not go over the basics with you when your car was delivered???

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately I am still waiting for delivery. I am just working on finding all I can about the features I have so I will not be inundated with how everything works all at once. Have a good day.

Yeah, I tried that while I was waiting for delivery myself. Didn't work too well!

I'm still finding out new things weekly. Best of luck with your new ride.

I know what you mean. This is why I have always taken the word of someone who has experience over those that have just read about it. Give me a hands on person over a book worm any day.

Still not a bad idea to download a .pdf of your manual so you can get a little ahead of the game while you wait.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have downloaded all pertinent documents on the vehicle. Docs on the car, turbo, N55... Every time I see an article that might present more information I download it and put it in my BMW folder.

I think I have read enough. I now have to wait to be able to apply what I have read. I did not want to spend hours at the dealership asking and playing with the different functions. I want to get on the road. I can sit in my garage or outside and read the manuals and play with the features in comfort.

Not being a very patient person this waiting is killing me. I can honestly say I would never order another car. I will find one that meets my needs on a lot someplace.

Thanks again for your advice.

And that is pure heaven. Like I said, I'm still learning and loving it. Sounds like you're prepared.
It will be worth the wait...stop being so impatient! Waiting builds character!

I don't know why the CA fobs have to be different that the other. I'm sure they could make it rechargeable that would be so much easier and probably last double the original time.

It may sound weird at first but I think their reasoning is specifically BECAUSE of Comfort Access. ie: CA removes the need to put the key in the dash, so to have to put it in the dash to charge seems a bit self-defeating.

Self defeating sure, but if you had the ability to recharge the FOB wouldn't you stick it in the every once and a while. I would, if I knew it would last longer on me. I mean, if with CA why have the FOB port at all? But that's just my opinion.

I'm not sure that recharging would make it last longer. Lithium-ion batteries pretty much lose their capacity to hold a charge after 12-18 months anyway.

For those with comfort access: always keep a spare key fob battery inside the car. Comes in handy whenever the battery dies. Do mind that sliding the key fob in the key fob slot will not recharge the battery on BMW's equipped with comfort access. To save battery life, avoid pushing the key fob - that's also the purpose why you got the comfort access option, isn't it ?

For those without comfort access: no need to keep a spare key fob battery inside the car, as the key fob battery is recharged every time you slide the key fob in the key fob slot.
