Top Speed in the 1M?

Hi,

I was in Germany today on the Autobahn (visit at the Techno Classica)! So, on my way back home, there was an Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster , in front of me on the 'Autobahn', and no speed limit!

So, I would test my 1M, went to 270 km/h on the speedometer, and 258 km/h on my portable GPS!
Aston was impressed, i only was 80-100 m behind him during 5-6 km!

1 hour later, same game with a new Porsche GT3, ok, it was much faster than me, so not really a chance to get him, but i came to 267 km/h on my GPS, it was a slightly downhill part of the Autobahn ! So, i was really impressed about the 1M!

I thought the 1M is blocked at 250 km/h??

My 1M is absolutely stock!! I have a crappy Iphone-Pic, to proof the 258 on the GPS!!

I think 267 kph or 268 kph is the real V-max for a 1M. It was posted way back when the 1M's first came out - even though "officially" they are limited to "250kph" per the gentleman's agreement.

Btw... I too got into a few "speed contests" on the way back from Essen/Techno Classic. The best was when I "walked" a e92 M3 to my V-max of 280 kph(gps).

Same experience just today. Definitely looks like not blocked to 250, well not mine (Euro spec) and at least not to 250 kph! This is unless my car is reading like 20 % wrong (more) on the speedo. I did 270 kph twice on a very long, flat and very empty highway, autobahn couldn't be better, road conditions were like super ideal and while the car was still going my passenger (wife) made me step back. The car really hits around 180 in 3rd (tested dozens of times), over 240 in 4th (I prefer to pass to 5th before 7000 rpm, that last time was maybe 6700 rpm with 240km/h reading) and just looks like going to hit 280 or a bit more easily on the right road. Today, we were 2 people in the car, full tank and some week-end luggage as well, so it was not even weight optimum. Tire pressures were 36psi front 34rear front when cold.

Also have a few videos my wife made, but not zooming on the gauges, just swallowing the horizon type of video.

Before anyone who has doubts ask it, the car is totally stock other than Michelin PSS tires on stock dimensions and has less than 2500 kms. First oil change done at 1600km. Since the PSS is just stickier and also comfier than PS2 my car can be considered as stock as it gets in terms of engine perf. especially Vmax test. I agree with Dackel, it really looks like close to 265 to 270 km/hour (real) vmax of the 1M. Impressive for me especially since we have the aerodynamical coefficient of a truck (0.37cX if I remember right).

Mine definitely tops out at 250kph... I have a BMS Speed delimiter, but no bueno, I took it off, it kills my cruise control! Though Mines not a 1M.

Could the dealer re-program the speed limit when the car in delivered in US or Canada??? They usually check for updates before doing final delivery...

The 250kp/h limit is a voluntary limit most of the german manufacturers have agreed upon. So, in theory a stock Audi A6 Diesel would be as fast as an M3 without the M3s restriction having been increased (you can order a "drivers package" in Germany and part of that is an increase of the speed limit of any M, with the exception of the 1M). Since BMW Germany doubts, that german M customers like the idea of being muscled by stock diesels, the limits on all Ms are raised slightly above the 250kp/h. Without the drivers package all the Ms I had so far (M346, M392, M182) were able to run 270kp/h (GPS measured). The two M3s close to 300 after their limit was increased. So nothing unusual. The 1M has a really hard time hitting the 270 though... I would assume that it simply creates too much aerodynamic drag. I personally don't care. I'll take downforce over topspeed any day.

183 mph with Epic Tune (GPS, not Speedometer). It might have a couple more mph but said test was a bit windy (I'm told).

My one maxed out about 265 km/h with a speed limiter on, but what I really want to know is whats the actual top speed of the 1M without a speed limiter.

A stock 1M w/o the speed limiter is probably gonna be around 270ish kph.

A "tuned" 1M is gonna be around 290 kph, just like a tuned 135i.

I have heard a "tuned 135i" can see 295ish kph. The fastest I have seen on my 135i is 283 kph. A "tuned 335i can do 300ish kph. One guy I know has seen 312 kph.

Over here in Germany, there are companies that will unlock the V-max (speed limiter) but your gonna pay upwards of 1K euros for just the unlocked V-max. And its not that much more for "chip tuning" so most people just go that route. I think it will be darn hard to find a 1M owner over here who only has his V-max unlocked. Most will just pony up the extra money for a flash tune.

the real reason why the 1M is limited to 267km/h is because the hood will fly off if you go any faster

haha

A detail that I have noticed about this matter: in the web site of Alpha-N which started producing fabulous CF pieces for the 1M, there are various tune options for the car as well, one of them is just V max limiter delete and they claim the top speed is 280 km/h. I think that might be true.

IF a German 1M owner would scan their fahrzeugschein (car registration paper)... ???

...in one of the boxes the German TÜV tests a cars true top speed/V-max(averaged in both directions on a flat road). What ever the number is... I have found that most cars can do 10 to 20 kph faster (that that number, on the speedo!) on the road going down a hill/autobahn!

See box #6 for this car's V-max... 230 kph in this case. So the car's speedo would show about 240-ish while the car's real gps speed is 230 kph.
