Looking for ballpark figure on 2009 128i...

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None
Item Interest
I have a 2009 128i that I am thinking of selling and getting a new 2012 128i, as mine is going out of warranty in November. I obviously know what KBB says the car is worth, but I wanted some of your opinions on a price I could realistically receive in a private sale.

Anyway, here are some important details on the 128i:
  • 41,000 miles in Very Good to Excellent condition
  • 6MT
  • Sports Package
  • Moonroof
  • Xenon Headlamps
  • Short Shift Kit
  • Black Leatherette / High Gloss Trim
  • 135i Rims (Style 264)
Thanks so much for any input you might have!

22k-24k?

I paid a little more for mine, but it was a 2010 with almost no miles and a very odd option list. I can't imagine why you would spend $10,000 though to "keep it in warranty". It's a 128i, what's going to break? It's not like it's a 135i or that dealerships yield all that great work.

Thanks for your response! My reasoning is based on a couple things.

First, if I sell now, I would receive roughly $22k or so (unless others say I'm crazy). If I wait four more years, which is how long I will probably keep my car if I go that route, I project the car will be worth around $14k. Again, just an estimate. So in sheer value terms, holding my current car four more years will "cost" me roughly $8k in lost sales value.

Secondly, I have to pay for maintenance and repairs for this time period. Conservatively, I can see $4k in maintenance and repairs cost over these four years. Therefore, the "cost" of holding this car would be roughly 12k.

If I buy new, I will again limit the options and purchase very close to invoice price of $32.8k. Coupling in BMW's new graduate $1k discount and taxes, I look to be out the door at $33k. Using the $22k selling price, I'm only financing $11k, which with my great credit score I will be able to finance at BMW's 3.9%. Payments would be in the $250 range. No maintenance and repairs costs. So over the 4 years, the "cost" would be roughly $12k.

TheSt|G and others, am I not factoring something that would change my decision? Thanks!

Agree

I would say $23-$24. This would assume 1 owner, no accidents or paintwork, all maintenance records. Also assume warranty over in 9K miles and and 1 year. 128's tho won't need warranty [my opinion]

1 owner, no accidents, all maintenance records, changed oil every 7500 miles, washed every week. Only negatives are that the car had a hood respray after someone keyed the hood only. Looks perfect now, though.

As for the warranty, it will be up at the end of November so about a half year left.

Garage List
$23-24 may be pretty optimistic. I sold my 2008 128i about two years ago now. It still had 2+ years of warranty left and had ~20k miles. I got $24k for it but was under a bit of pressure to sell because we were moving (Carmax offered me only $21k). It was a manual, sport pk, zenon, leather, heater seats, moonroof.

I would guess $20-22k max, but maybe you will find the right buyer. Good luck.

I second the opinion to just keep it.

2009 128i  [5.00]
Man! I would assume that my 128 would be worth a good bit then... glad to see them holding value.

2009 128i (17k miles) - No dings/scratches/original owner/good title in hand.
