The 80's "is" models also included LSD's, but my understanding was that they became exclusive to M models in the mid-90's, almost 20 years ago (in other words, it's not really fair to expect this car to have one).

It's not an M and it's not supposed to be. Of course it doesn't have an LSD. It's a regular series car with some parts from the Performance catalog and a few cosmetic bits. If it's only $2200 more than the regular M-Sport, what is there to complain about? You get the exhaust, arguably better wheels, cool blue stitching, plus the PPK of course (which comes with a lot of hardware upgrades that no aftermarket tune offers).

No, it's not the most bad ass car ever made. But if I were shopping for a 135i in 2013, I definitely think I'd choose this over the regular car. I would still upgrade the suspension, but a lot of the other modding would be done already.

Like a regular 135i nav is not standard but power seats are.

A stripped down model would be fun (I'd like a stripped down 255HP 128i for even more weight savings), but it's hard to know how much of a market there would be for a car that would cost more (in all likelihood) but offer fewer features. Porsche seems to wrap up that market with their R variants and those are fairly rare. Also, a light/track 1 Series would have trouble following the more full-featured 1 Series M in the market.

The sunroof would add more weight than the power seats and navigation combined. Even worse for the height of the car's center of gravity. Still it doesn't stop most people from buying these cars with a sunroof.

New top performance model 1 Series for 2013

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 15, 2012 …. In the long standing tradition of high performance BMW “is� models, BMW today announced an enhanced performance version of the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible called the BMW 135is. The 2013 135is Coupe and Convertible focus the qualities that made the 135i such a success amongst driving enthusiasts – with more performance, enhanced sound and dynamic design details. Both the new 135is Coupe and Convertible are scheduled to arrive in BMW Center showrooms this fall with retail pricing set at $44,145 and $48,845 respectively (including $895 destination and handling).

Both models are equipped with BMW’s award winning TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 engine (N55) featuring Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, direct injection and a single twin-scroll turbocharger. For the 135is, the engine has been tuned to increase peak horsepower to 320 hp (+20 hp increase) and 317 lb-ft of torque (+17 lb.ft) while maintaining the same emissions level and MPG ratings of the 135i. A Performance exhaust system complements the increased engine performance and provides a sporty exhaust tone. The engine cooling system has been upgraded to match the additional performance output by adding a larger, and more powerful radiator fan and an auxiliary radiator.

Both BMW 135is models will be offered with either a standard 6-Speed manual transmission or an optional 7-Speed Double Clutch Transmission.

The 135is is equipped with sport suspension incorporating an aluminum double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel.

BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also includes a Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function that provides electronic intervention to prevent loss of vehicle control, but at a higher threshold before activation. This allows the driver to experience more spirited driving on dry roads and offers more flexibility when driving in more challenging conditions such as in snow. If the driver desires, both DSC and DTC can be disabled entirely. In addition to its duties as a safety system, the DSC system on the 135is is programmed specifically to enhance performance-oriented driving.

The differential in the 135is comes from a new generation of final drives optimized for running smoothness and fuel efficiency. Featuring double-helical ball bearings, the differential runs at an even lower operating temperature reached more quickly than before thanks to the reduction of fluid required in the differential. Electronic rear brake management is used to simulate a differential lock for stronger acceleration in turns and low-traction conditions.

The exterior of the new 135is Coupe / Convertible will be clearly identified by exclusive 18� wheels, unique high-gloss black kidney grill, black mirror caps and special exterior badges in additional to the standard M Sport Package components. Interior highlights include stainless steel pedals, special interior badges and optional black leather seats with blue stitching for the standard sport seats.

The BMW135is Coupe and Convertible are available to order now and are scheduled to arrive in BMW Center showrooms this fall.

Yes!

Leipzig is capable of a "mixed" production, meaning one car is a F20, one is an e82, or e88 and the next is an X1 on the line.

1M production ends in July though. Soon we will be seeing more and more M135i's (F21's) on the streets of Germany.

The 135is appeals to me in my situation. My 2010 135i is coming off lease in October. I want to replace it with a new 135i. I can get the 135is with the same extra options for about $3,000 more than how I would option up a new 2013 135i M Sport. I wouldn't get the sport exhaust, arguably nicer wheels, 135is specific DSC mapping, and the extra power and cooling stock with a factory warranty with the standard 135i. Also, I can't wait around until the 2 series finally shows up in the US. That's worth $3k to me.

It does suck that I could have gotten a 1M for almost the same price, but that ship has sailed. The timing did not work out for me. Maybe when my new 2013 MY lease is up I'll be in position to grab a new M2.


Question: The release says that it will be equipped with a "sport suspension". Is this the same standard suspension available on the regular 135i? I am a little confused about that part.

The 135is will do nicely... Make mine Alpine White with Coral Red interior, please. I can't wait!

It's not enough of a reward.
My 2009 135i lease is up, and I REALLY wanted news on the replacement 1 or 2, but all we get is this. A small bump in power, trying to keep the faithful happy until the new one comes.

I've got a 2013 335i M sport on order.
Which will work out fine. IN 3 years, the new 1/2 will have been out for a couple of years and I'll look at getting that one then.
If BMW does to the 1/2 what they've done with the 3, in terms of interior, then it should be very sweet.
OH, and I hope they work on the suspension, and leave the steering hydraulic, unless they can really figure our a way to use electric and maintain feel.

I agree with this comment - both parts of it.

Coming recently from a 2011 X3 35i, a 2009 M3 sedan, and a 2008 535xi, I have to endorse the idea that the current 135i is BMW's best kept secret. It may be the high price relative to the 3 Series cars, but I don't see many 135i's around here. Having just got mine a couple days ago, I am truly amazed how much fun this car is (and I say against my experiences with the M3). The 135i MSport just feels so light and nimble..!!

I toyed with the idea of waiting for the 135is, but needed to proceed before the 135is comes later this year. It sounds like a fun machine, suspect it may only last for the MY 2013 tho.

Sadly, there's very little chance the steering will remain hydraulic. It'll most likely use the electric steering mechanism from the F30 or similar. Fuel economy trumps all these days...
