Afe stage 2 intake

Installed about a month ago. Have to say it works pretty well. Throttle response much sharper and mid-range pull is stronger, for both normal and wide-open-throttle. Overall, the engine breathes much easier & smoother.

I was actually only going for a drop-in filter, but later noticed the stock air-box has too small an airflow surface area to the engine. If you remove the stock air-box lid, you'd see that after the filter the air flows through such a tiny and thin area within the lid.

The other thing I noticed after a month is fuel consumption improved. Was getting 6-7km/ltr initially, now about 8-9km/ltr.

Only slightly. More high up in the rev range. But I preferred it that way.

Thanks for the write-up, I was hesitant about an intake upgrade, nice to hear that it works well. Also I am waiting to hear if Dinan will offer its 1M specific intake soon and for what cost.

Which type did you guys choose, the Pro Dry filter that they say is easier to clean the (grey colored) filters or the blue one?

I wonder if this works equally well in different climatic conditions like cold and dry vs. hot and humid.

Did you put some sort of thermal wrap on it?

Yes. Thermal wrapped and sealed most escape holes.

Don't really like the fact that dirt gets through... but in an urban environment it should be ok

OneM -

Very glad you're pleased with your new intake and it does look good.

However, unless your stock filter was really dirty, it would not account for your increased mileage and any increased power (perhaps 2-3 rwhp) would be very hard to detect.

Is there any additional air flow into the intake box or does it use the stock plumbing? To me for an intake to make significant gains, there must be an increase in air flow which requires a larger or additional openings to allow for more flow.

The stock airbox itself is actually the bottleneck, a very shallow box, both under and above the filter element. As GIAC has proven that the stock airbox is good at stock power levels, but at elevated power levels the intake is worth 7-10 whp or more depends on what kind of power(boost) you are making. In addition, the AFE intake is very efficient in back to back testing with or without it installed on the car, the power ouput stayed the same on GIAC's dyno.

What do you figure it's worth on a car with a stock tune and no other mods?

Looks good, and I like the closed air design, finally bringing the term "Cold Air Intake" to fruition. While I too anxiously away to see the Dinan one (pricey no doubt), I still can't help but wonder how much, if any, do these CAIs really contribute.

IIRC, none of the 7 (ok, 6 tuned and 1 stock) cars in the 1///M tuner shootout in Germany had CAIs, when in fact they had just about everything else...

For perspective, Dinan claims their CAI adds +14 Hp with their Stage 3 tune, +12 with Stage 2, +9 with Stage 1, and +5 with a stock tune.

I know people have dyno'd bigger gains than these, but I expect the proportions are pretty accurate.

...adding: I guess the Dinan Stage 1 tune is comparable to stock 1M.

Quicker throttle response, a little bit of induction sound and horse power increase that is negligible.

A good intake can only help with building more power down the road. GIAC recommends aftermarket intakes with their flashes to support the additional airflow requirements.
