n55 hartge tune

Hi guys,

I just saw Hartge released a tune for the F10 N55 and I was like "holy sh*t !". Hartge used to make me dream in my childhood by putting M5 engines in M3...

I looked a little and I saw they also made tunes for the 135i N55. How come was I unaware of this? I probably wouldn't mind paying the extra $$ just from their reputation.

Anyways I looked up on the internet but I couldn't find a review, a user dyno, etc... Nor could I find anywhere to buy this !

I'd probably need to contact them directly, but before I do that I'd like to know if any of you guys tried their tune and could post feedback !

I was really excited to see this. We need more n55 tuning options. I love my n54 but it's clear the n55 is the future.

I have been throwing the idea around about getting a x1 and tuning it.

If you do get the tune please get a dyno and write a review.

Couldn't find the thread in news about this, but, this is great news for me, as the UK's Hartge dealer (Birds) is only a few miles away from me, and looking at the prices the Hartge N55 tune on the Birds website, it is almost exactly the same price as the PPK v.2 from BMW.....so good value with a good back up as well

What is interesting from the Hartge website is the comparison of their N55 tune with their N54 one.

Hartge N55 = 362hp @ 5660rpm & 354 lbs/ft @ 2950rpm
Hartge N54 = 350hp @ 5900rpm & 369 lbs/ft @ 3700rpm

Ok apparently the 135i unit and the F30 335i are the same: code 11 35 2306 J.
Here is the 135i: http://www.hartge.de/e/bmw_motor_4915.html
Here is the F30: http://www.hartge.de/e/bmw_motor_6577.html
--> Same code.

It kind of makes sense since both are N55 engines but I have no idea if the F30 has exactly the same or an evolution of it. On the tunermotorsport website they only say it fits the F30 335, the F10 535 and the F25 X3 .

No mention of our 135i...

I've sent an email to both Hartge and tunermotorsport for confirmation.

New to everything. If you installed this device would you also have to upgrade the intake cooling system and the entire exhaust system? While I am at it what are the various parts of the exhaust system: DP, Mid pipes, exhaust pipes...?

This is only a chip that you connect to your ECU and other sensors. You don't need to upgrade anything else AFAIK.

???

I believe the Hartge tune is a 'proper' bench flashed tune of the ECU.....it's not a 'piggyback' unit.

sounds/looks like a piggy to me:
"The Hartge 'Engine Conversion' is a bespoke tuning module that plugs in ahead of the engine computer on the wiring harness. It has factory-style plugs to connect in-line with the water temp sensor, fuel rail pressure, turbo boost pressure sensors, turbo wastegate valve, intake camshaft sensor, 12V power and ground. The module then sends a modified signal to the engine computer allowing it to increase boost by varying amounts depending on load, engine speed, and other factors."

I wish there were people on the forums with experience with this tune. There are limited options for the N55 and it would be great if we could get some real insight on the gains, install, and features of it

From what I have read it appears that this is a fairly new piece of equipment. If that is correct maybe someone, soon, will provide info on how it is performing.

Pity Hartge don't make this clear on their own website, and to be honest, that's a lot of cash for a piggyback system........??

Am in two minds now

Edit:
I've just looked again at the German site, and now I know what I'm looking for, you can see the N55 kit is a piggyback unit, like the one they do for the diesel engines, whereas the N54 tune isn't and is a reprogrammed ECU unit, which is why I assumed the N55 was as well.

I received some details from Hartge, which BTW informed me that TunerMotorsport is indeed the only Hartge dealer for US and Canada.

I will forward the details they agreed to share with the community:

-----

The Hartge Engine Conversion is significantly different to other, often cheaper systems.
Our Hi-Tech system contains many "smart" technical features, and is the result of many months of design, testing and durability trials. The investment we have made during the development program has resulted in a full 3 year warranty on the hardware and software.

Technical features are as follows:
The Hartge ECU is an external additional control unit. It is internally sealed and cannot be detected by BMW service procedure interrogations. It is also not possible that BMW software updates can disturb the performance of the Hartge ECU. Unlike engine management "chipping" and "flash" upgrades, it never gets overwritten during service enhancements by BMW.

Example 35i (new engine N55 - 1 Turbo - TwinSroll)
The Hartge ECU is connected via a special wiring harness to the air flow meter, camshaft sensor, boost pressure sensor 1, boost pressure sensor 2, turbo valve, water temperature sensor, rail pressure sensor, and power supplies (all plug and play).

Additional power is generated by increasing the turbo boost pressure by a precisely calculated number.
This number depending on engine speed, calculated engine load and other parameters. The BMW ECU continues to monitor all other important engine parameters as standard.

In extreme temperature conditions, the Hartge ECU also monitors the exhaust gas temperature, and if this exceeds the safe limit, the Hartge ECU reduces power accordingly back to standard BMW power.
There is also overload protection, which prevents full power from being delivered for excessively long periods of time, for example when towing heavy loads, or driving for too long at V-max.
Finally, to protect the engine from stress, the Hartge ECU will only allow full engine performance to be achieved when the engine has reached operating temperature (more than 158 degrees Fahrenheit / 70 degrees Celsius)

All standard BMW engine protection and emissions systems remain in place and continue to function.

Our piggyback system comes with an illustrated installation manual.

Please contact our North American distributor Turner Motorsport www.turnermotorsport.com
for further information.1

So what does one get for the additional $1000 over a straight up JB for N55? (confuzzled)

It's more like the JB3 / N55 Stage1 since it does not have CANbus access wires for wheel controls, in dash gauges, map switching, CAN datalogging, etc.

To be honest, I'm hesitating myself between that and a JB3/JB4. I like Hartge's reputation a lot, they have over 30 years of experience in motorsport and tuning BMWs. They are kind of like Alpina and AC Schnitzer, although I guess those two are not very famous neither in North America.

That been said, I do not know more about the tune than what I posted. The fact that it connects to 7 sensors (and that they are German ) does give me confidence that they have a well engineered product, but I'm still looking for more information.
