LL-01 or LL-04
Hey guys,
Im sure this has probably been answered before but does anyone know which grade we should be running in the N54 135i? Im currently thinking about running Total engine oil as it worked really well with my previous car. This oil seems to be suited perfectly for the 135i N54 but its LL-04. Some people seem to think we shouldnt run this in Aus, can anyone confirm? http://www.totaloil.com.au/Pages/content/NT0000C37A.pdf |

LL-1 = for high sulfur fuels (USA/NA)
LL-4 = for low sulfur fuels (Germany/Europe) But thats really more for when you are running the really long OCI (oil change interval) that BMW says you can. I always change my oil every 6K kms regardless. Sometimes lmore often IF I have been really hard on the engine. BMW also says any of the following grades is ok: 0w30, 0w40, 5w30, 5w40 They also say to use an oil that has an API SM or higher and an ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4. I use German Castrol. he oil I use is called: Castrol RS Edge 0w40, its a LL-4 oil with an API of SM. This oil hase been replaced by: Castrol Edge FST (fluid strength technology) that is: 0w40, API SM, and LL-1. IF you use Mobil-1 oil... only their 0w40 European Blend, LL-1, API SN, oil is approved. The reason I use German Castrol is because my engine runs much quieter on cold starts and runs cooler oil temps. (about two needle widths lower, than when I used Mobil-1, 0w40). Dack

Yea... I think that is why Castrol has gone to all LL-1 oils. Even over here in Germany... I can not find a LL-4 Castrol oil. That really doesn't bother me too much since I change my oil often.
The BMW (dealer) oils are still LL-4 though. The ones in the silver bottle. Dack

This thread just prompted several hours of googling oils... You know what i learnt? X oil is better than y oil! Y oil is better than x oil... X oil is shit, it wrecked my engine! No Y oil is shit, it wrecked my engine, X oil is amazing! Nooo Z oil is the best! Derhhh
Well.. That and as long as it's a base IV/V fully synthetic theres probably not much in it assuming you have sensible intervals |

AMSOIL is the best, not a single bad word about it, if you can find a dislike post, tell me. However, expensive for oil Motul 300v is awesome too (i haven't done too much reading on it so yet to confirm, i didn't manage to see any hate) Redline/royal purple seem to be about 90% positive reviews, with comments their common price is fairy high but definitely good for their 'race' variants and a great buy if you find on sale - redline i believe is base V , royal varies from IV - V (i think?) depending on which level you get. I think their top race stuff is V an their lower is IV? Mobil 1 from a quick google is base III (not truly synthetic) in some variants that claim to be 'synthetic' and others are base IV, have to be careful when buying the bottle to check.. same with castrol edge possibly, but they're mostly IV Last edited by flinchy; 07-26-2012 at 01:41 AM.. |

i can't really find a single thing on fuchs?
i didn't actually see MUCH on motul, just enough to gather that reviews are almsot entirely positive (I mean really, it's SUPER expensive oil lol) and yeah, german castrol being universally good, where other regular castrol varies at the moment it looks like redline is a pretty high-up-there choice for me especally at the price of it |

I really don't understand why you would bother with all these overly expensive/smaller name brand oils. As long as it has a BMW LL-01 listing and correct viscosity, what's the point when you are changing it every 5000km-7000kms? If it has BMW ll-01 it obviously has been tested and approved by BMW...
The reason why you can't find much on royal purple in n54 applications is because nobody uses it on our cars (doubt it even has a LL-01 application) stick to what's been tried and tested, no need to be a hero! |
