I made up my mind then to purchase a full size spare that day. This is really the only way to drive far from home.

I have the space saver spare (came with the car), but on the rare occasions I take the car more than 100 miles away from home, I put in a full size alloy. Takes up a little more room than the space saver, but worth the peace of mind. It's usually just me on day trips, so I never have luggage.

Thankfully (knock on wood) the last few flats I've had were found in the driveway (typically after the car has sat the night).

IF the slime is from BMW it is safe for TPMS sensors.

The problem is when you put a liter of that stuff inside your tire... its gonna vibrate, and still you can only drive up to 80 kph with it inside the tire. So really whats the point. I think a full size spare is the only solution.

And would you have to take the car to BMW to have the tire repaired (which apparently they won't do) and have the slime removed? And would/could a regular tire store remove the slime?

Good point.

My German tire dealer has a special machine to wash the wheels in. They charge 8 euros per wheel to clean them. Its looks like a big dish washer. It works really well.

As for the tire that has been "slime'd"... I don't think you can clean all of the old slime out. I think once you use the slime... you are buying a new tire. Dne deal.

The other thing with run flats is you can(should only drive up to 200 kms and only up to 80 kph on a flat) For me, when I had a flat some 500 kms away from home... that would not have worked. And well besides... I had ditched my run flats for regular tires(PS3's). The way the BMW Assist guy explained it to me was like this. Best is a full size(real) spare, then a space saver spare. Last resort is to use the slime. And then your gonna (probably) damage your tire beyond repair. So get ready to buy one or two new tires!

The best bet, is an old school, full size tire. Personally I think not have a full size spare and not having a real (engine) dip stick is pretty dumb on BMW's part. Especially for a car company with MOTOR in its middle name... how can you NOT have a real dip stick!!

Agreed.

Having an electronic dipstick isn't going to make someone check their oil any more than having a real dipstick... And a real dipstick is pretty much never ever going to fail.

I have to disagree with you on this point. I can only speak for myself, but I know I "check" my oil much more frequently than I ever did in previous dipstick-equipped BMWs.

Same here, although much of the checking is to find out if the motor is warm enough for a reading, as neither of my Bimmers have a water or oil temp gauge.

I've had quite the fiasco today with these damn runflats today. I am located in southern orange county and have a small nail in the tread, no where near the side wall which is easily fixable and no shop around will even touch these things cause its a liability. Thank god its not leaking that bad and I found a runflat specialist that will fix it for me tomorrow for free. Can't wait till I need new tires to ditch these things.
