When life gives you lemons, you paint that **** gold

Got rear-ended today and I am trying to hold it together and look at it on the bright-side. My 135i was the major victim, I only suffered some minor whiplash. (The other car has almost 0 visible damage, just scratch(es).)
So for making this situation better, I want to use insurance to make my car better and replace the OEM 135i bumper with a 1M bumper. Any advice, part #'s, prices, etc? In addition, has anyone here dealt with State Farm? I need to figure out how decently they treat the other party (me) in repair and what I should be careful of/need to know when dealing with them.(This is my first accident ever in almost 10 years of driving so to say I am disappointed is a bit of an understatement).

sorry to hear about the accident bro. glad to hear you're okay though. I was rear-ended a few months back as well.
as for the 1m bumper, not sure, but isn't it a bit wider? I would have them put an aftermarket diffuser though.
p.s. hope you're still gonna make it Saturday.

The rear bumper is like half on half off. I'm not sure I want to roll to the meet like that :/

Yeah the 1M bumper is wider than the 135's. You would probably need to add the rear fenders to get everything to line up.

Would I also need to do side skirts?

yes. going by 135i-> 1m conversion requires bumpers fenders and the side skirts to be done in unison. unless you do the front only, then you need to make a mash up of 135i sideskirt with part 1m sideskirt. i assume its the same if you do the back only as well

Thanks buddy, do you know if the bumper tabs are broken, does that mean that the rear side panel's tabs are broken too?

That, I'm not familiar with. I just remember reading about a 1m conversion in the cosmetic section(forgot the owner's 1addicts name and am too lazy to find it) and seeing that the sideskirts were one of the humps to get over. hopefully someone can fill you in more.

though, it may be possible to make a mash up of stock bumper and 1m bumper to have the style of the 1m but have it still fit the stock rear quarter panels and sideskirt.

going oem, no hack and slash stuff if I can prevent it. I know exactly which thread you mean cause that's what I was going by so far. Fingers crossed that this allows me to do a 1M rear retrofit.

The 1M rear retrofit is easier said than done. The problem is that the rear quarter panel is welded on, so it takes a LOT of work to replace it. The only rear-end conversion that I know of was Tony135 (just last week), and he said that he spent over $6,000 just on the rear quarter panel conversion. And that was done by LTMW, which usually has very good prices because their BMW expertise allows them to do the same work in fewer hours.

If I were in your place, I'd get something like this:
http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/2...1-p-59475.html

Probably cheaper through Schmiedmann.

Go OEM on the bumper and try to get the performance diffuser?

Thanks man! I am trying to keep it OEM 1M looking though. I'll post pictures once the claim has been settled so you can see, my entire rear bumper is trashed as well as any tabs connecting it to the quarter panels. I don't know if that means that the quarters will also need replacing. Since this just occurred I don't know whether "fixing" the tabs on the quarters will be greater or less than replacing the quarters altogether.

I would but I was planning on doing a 1M retrofit once I finished grad school. This just pushed the project earlier.

If your insurance is paying for the quarter panels, then you can definitely turn some lemons into gold. That's the hardest and most expensive part of a 1M conversion.

If you're just doing the rear end, then the side skirts will also be a challenge. The stock 135i skirts won't match up with the 1M parts, and the 1M skirts won't match up with the factory 135i front end. You'd have to splice your factory 135i skirt with a 1M skirt to produce a hybrid that'll fit your 135i front end and your 1M back end. Somebody did it recently (except the opposite - 135 back, 1M front)... the body shop guy apparently told him that the splice job was 20 hours on its own.

yes,
the rear end is the greatest challenge. Do note, if you only do the rear end with the OEM bumper, you will have to Mod your rear quarters and sideskirts as the flat rim (quarter panel) around the wheel well is thinner on the 1M. your 135i is considerably thicker. It looks ok when only the front end is widened as the thicker rear rim is forgiving. It would look awkward with the thin rear and a thick front. If you do the rear, you might as well do the front too as you would already be doing the most expensive and difficult work.

You will also have to modify your battery tray to fit a true 1M exhaust or have a custom exhaust made.

Option 1:
OEM 1M front bumper, fenders, skirts, rear bumper, diffuser - Custom Rear Quarters, Custom Exhaust (or new battery tray and true 1m exhaust)

Option 2:
OEM front bumper, fenders, modified 1M side skirts ( modified rear part of the skirt to fit with 135I rear)

Option 3:
OEM 1M rear bumper, Modified rear quarters, modified side skirts, Custom Exhaust ( or new battery tray and true 1m exhaust)

Option 4: Custom 1M rear bumper and Custom Exhaust ( or new battery tray and true 1m exhaust)

this is the part which is thinner on the 1M

Good luck with State Farm. They are one of the worst insurance companies to work with. Make sure that you take the car to a body shop of your choice not to one State Farm will steer you to. State Farm love to use non OEM replacement parts. It takes a good shop to talk them into paying for BMW OEM parts (mine had to show them that their cheap s**** didn't fit correctly before they would pay for a new OEM parts.)

You always have the option of going through your insurance company and having State Farm reimburse them. But, you will have to pay your deductible which won't be reimbursed to you until your insurance settles with State Farm.
