Gear box oil help...
Anyone be able to tell me what grade of oil my gearbox would take or where i could find out. Emailed BMW but they haven't responded and will most likely just say its life time oil. Couldn't see anything on penrite or castrol sites. Be really helpful thanks.

It probably came with MTF-LT-2. But that has been replaced by MTF-LT-3 and then by MTF-LT-4. I suspect that MTF-LT-5 (or LT-6 as some have said BMW has gone too) could be the latest fluid BMW recommends. I assume you have a manual gearbox right?
http://bmwetk.info/parts-catalog/prd...926/23/23_0918 For your diff use Castrol SAF-XJ 75w140 synthetic gear oil. You need 1.5L for the diff and 2.1L for the trans(MTF-LT-5). Btw... you could also use Redline ATF D6 for the manual trans oil.

I used a vacuum/pump (see that blue on in my thread bellow) to add fluid into the trans. It has a long clear hose on the end... so you can fit the hose up next to the trans and car body to add new/fresh trans oil into the gearbox. Check out my DIY.... post #70 http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...=409293&page=4

Hmmm you gearbox took 2.0 and your diff took 1.2. Better confirm what mine takes i would think they would be similar if not the same. Thanks Ken roughly what did your gearbox take 2L as well ? Also if you have done the diff what did that roughly take ?

I have an N54. I know the N55(and 1M) use less fluid in the gear box. (only 1.1L vs 2.1L for my car). Its better to have more fluid on hand than less. Besides... you can always use it later on for that second trans fluid change! It is really so easy there is no reason why you should change the trans/diff fluids more often. Forget BMW's Lifetime fluid BS. ![]()

Some say not to jack/rasie the car from the diff... but I did not see any other way I could life the rear of the car safely. I really do not see how this could damage the car. So that is what I decided to do. ![]()
