Baby M with 442hp 499tq with ESS Stage 1 Gen 2 Tune w/Dynos

It's been a while since posting anything for the Baby M, but now that I have been running the ESS Stage 1 Gen 2 Tune it is worthy of posting up. This is their 2nd Generation of their Stage 1 Tune. It offers even more power and torque than the 1st Generation Stage 1 Tune, but more refined. The sport button functionality is maintained and the throttle response is instant. This was loaded using the ESS E-Flash cable which plugs directly into my laptop. Files are downloaded to the 1M in 10 mins or less. The beauty is that I can put the stock file back on the car in a matter of minutes if needed, for example if going to dealer for service.

As for the driveability with the Stage 1 Gen 2 Tune, the daily driving is the same as stock unless you feel the need to launch a rocket and then you just put the right foot down. The torque is incredible and pegs you into the seat, even the 295's for rear tires have trouble keeping the power down. There is next to no lag and the power comes on really fast and really strong. Just above 2,000rpms the car is a rocket with a smooth steep climb in power and torque. The hills around my house are no match for this added torque and power as the Baby M flies up the hills with ease! Drifting in the Baby M was easy before, but now it is even easier with the added punch. Overall the Stage 1 Gen 2 Tune feels more smooth with the delivery of power and torque compared to the Stage 1 Gen 1 Tune. As for the track, I have had this tune while on the Roval at Fontana reaching speeds of over 155mph on the oval and reeling in M3's all day long with no issues!

I am also testing out the ESS Stage 2 Tune which will be released soon, complete with dynos and reviews. I am also looking into upgrading turbos with ESS in the near future. The ESS Stage 2 Tune will be for 93+ fuel only and will be ideally designed for cars with upgraded downpipes and upgraded Intercoolers.

Here is the Baby M's stats and dyno for the Stage 1 Gen 2 Tune. Dyno runs were performed the same day on the same dyno at EAS.
  • Akrapovic Catless Downpipes
  • Eisenmann Full Race Exhaust
  • KW V3's
  • HRE P43S 19x9.5 and 19x10.5
  • IND Color Matched Grills
  • IND Color Matched Side Markers
  • Slek Lip Spoiler
  • EAS Carbon Mirrors
  • Fuel 93 Octane

Special Thanks to Tom and Steve at EAS for their Dyno assistance!

Based on using the standard 15-17% drivetrain loss the 1M Stage 1 Gen 2 Tune is making about 442 HP and 499 TQ at the crank.

Thanks for posting up.

So 'Stock' = mechanically 100% stock, but with 93 octane - which is not CA 91 octane?

Very interesting indeed! Is this available free if you have already purchased the gen 1?

Yes on 93 octane. I dyno'd the car the same day stock vs. the stage 1 gen 2 tune, so both had the Akrapovic downpipes and Eisenmann Full Race Exhaust.

I hope this helps!

Contact ESS to see what they say about this Gen 2 if you already have the Gen 1. I do not want to speak for them.

biglare: can you sell the new stage 1 Gen 2 ESS tune to another party in future? I remember the Gen 1 you could.

You cannot re-sell our software to be used on another vehicle. The E-Flash cable is VIN locked once used. Customers who have our older generation stage 1 tune can get it updated to the newer gen 2 at no charge.

Looks good, I think you underrated it though because the math appears to be a little incorrect. With 15-17% loss you should be at 448-458hp and 507-519tq which is even better.

Roman, for the Stage 2 tune can you send me the info as well and is that a free upgrade to current users?

ESS Stage 1 Gen 2 tune installed a week ago, great install by SoutherBM in Melbourne, thanks Andrew, and a rapid same day turnaround from the boys at ESS.

Car pulls by hard with a very linear delivery.

(Car has akra cat back with no butterfly)

Stage 1 Gen 2 installed by yours truly over the weekend. At first, rolling around doing "Driving Miss Daisy" I thought,"Not much difference". But, then...I found a familiar spot to open it up a little bit and then try the M button Good googlymoogly!

Nice job, ESS. Stock setup except swapping out my N54 midpipe for the N55 this week as well.

Would love a report back on exhaust sound and any driving differences between stock, tune and tune + n55 mid. Wondering about sound, throttle response and resonance. Thanks in advance!

OP I wonder if you could tell me the gains in HP,sound, trottle response,... from the catless downpipe or was it already there from the beginning? I ask you this because i now have a full exhaust except for the downpipes...

Dynoed mine a couple weeks back with ESS Stage 1 Gen 2, 355HP at the wheels, akra DP back and stock otherwise. Ambient temp was 95 degrees FH.

Pretty happy with that, mind you it would have been useful with a baseline figure, which I don't have.

Well, I didn't do any formal dyno stuff. With a 5 month old around, there's not much free time. I did the tune, then the midpipe about a week later.

Tune: Obvious difference. It seems to pull over a broader range than the stock setup. At first, it's deceiving, because you don't have that lurch/rapid change that the stock setup has. It just pulls more smoothly. Then you look down at the speedo and . And then I depressed the M button. . Holy smokes! It just pulls over a wider range and does it with such quiet ferocity that it's scary. I will not be taking off the DSC for a long time.

Midpipe: Somewhat of a let-down, honestly. However, that might be because I picked it up and the car had already been warmed up...so no cold-start nirvana there. I haven't had the chance to cold-start yet, so I will followup post later. It does get rid of the highway drone. It aso *does* sound more aggressive at higher RPMs/WOT.

Tune + midpipe: It *seems* like the tune is even a little more noticeable with the midpipe/less "restricted", though I could be imagining it. With the two together, the car pulls like an animal. It's really deceiving.

Sound: As above, better at WOT. Presumably cold start will be better (more on that later). Drone deleted.
Throttle responsiveness: Improved/no lag, especially in M mode.
Resonance: A little deeper. It's subtle.

Thanks for that. If I go engine mods it'll be in order: n55 mids, then a self-loadable tune. However I think I will probably spend resource on suspension first. Enjoy your re-upped beast.

So I cold-started today, and it wasn't all that impressive . However, it does sound nicer at speed (had the windows down since it was a little warmer) and higher RPM as previously noted. Drone remains gone .
