So today on my new job commute I was behind a construction truck for a few seconds when all the sudden I hear a rock hit the hood of my car. I freaked and punched the gas to pass the truck immediately. Once I got home after a long day I do a brief inspection to find a huge scratch on my hood.
![]() So I was wondering if anyone on here had some experience with that Dr color chip kit, I'm thinking about ordering one. You really can't tell from a distance unless you look closely at the hood, my experience with the OEM touch up kit seems to make it more noticeable with a huge blob mess. I'm leaning at just leaving it how it is since anything short of respraying the whole hood is going to make it worse. Thoughts??

IMO, sort of like what other posters said, it should polish out. I would do it in this order, however:
- clean the panel with a grease-cutting soap like Joy or Dawn to remove wax/sealant. if you can, wipe it down with a 50/50 IPA/water mixture to get the residual chemicals off - Claybar the area to be polished to remove embedded dirt (which will cause light scratches when you polish - Polish with a medium cutting polish like the 3m a poster above mentioned using a dual-action polisher such as a Porter cable 7424 - re-seal your panel using a good paint sealant (this gives you that awesome shine) - let the sealant cure the appropriate time as per the manufacturer's instructions - wax - enjoy luckily for you it looks pretty superficial. good luck, op. it doesnt appear that the base coat was scratched. IF that is the case then i have had a lot of success with this product.
you simply apply and very very lightly buff. Scratches gone. http://www.dvelup.com/Cart/index.php...products_id=59 I would not use a paint on this unles everything else fails first.

I don't think clay or polish is gonna work, i ran my fingers across it and its a gash alright only thingis that it didn't go all the way to the metal.

I can see the pigment all the way across that area because i can see the metal flake in it. That tells me that only the clear coat was damaged. The product i posted will fix that. You will still feel it but you wont see it. Plus it has a sealer in it

That'll buff out.
Seriously, it will. As others have said, I can see the paint all the way across. Any good polish/compound will take that off. Worst case, just take it to a local auto body shop and have them wet sand it.

I have had GREAT results with Maguiar's scratch x. In fact was in the same boat as you with a scuff yesterday and buffed right out.
If it were me, as a start, i would -Wash area with car shampoo thoroughly -Clay bar if funds are ample, skip if not -Dry with slightly damp microfiber -Damp polish with scratch x and microfiber -Damp polish with finer polish and microfiber -Brief dry polish -Clean area -Wax Sounds like the 3m stuff could be used in leui of scratch x, both seem like great products. whole ordeal could be fixed up for $10 and you should have this stuff in your repertoire anyway. at that point it probably wont' be noticeable enough to even care about. if it hasnt gone through the paint you may want to add a small layer of clear just after the wash phase listed above. never needed to do that so not sure how it would work though. the last thing you want to do is go through the paint if it hasnt at this point though. All of this adds character, don't sweat it. focus on the bigger picture and you will be happier.

Yeah it seems the clear coat was taken of but some paint still remains. Will look into the kit you mentioned. Thanks.

you probably don't have a PC7424.
Instead you can use a couple clean microfiber towels and buff in a circular motion with a slight amount of pressure. Golf234 and Cheshirecat directions are correct. Yes I do this as my side-business. Yes I know what I am talking about. i don't like scratch-x....but I do love meguiars #105 or 3m ultra-cut compound

Just did the fingernail test and it does NOT catch on seems it's not as bad as i expected. Think I'm gonna try the 3M scratch removal kit which includes a 3000 Grit abrasive square.
