What would you NOT change on the 1M!

So, I recently replied to a survey by the ///M guys after purchasing my shirt and along with the other thread on what would you change on the 1M, it got me thinking. Here is what I would NOT change on the 1M. I think these are key items that need to stay.

1. While it should have race car power and throttle response, the 1M should stay with a non-exotic motor.

Motors are so good now that the 1M can be tuned for more power and better response without going into a crazy exotic motor like the V8 M3. There needs to be an ///M car that is reasonably priced and reasonable to maintain for those that actually want to drive it hard. Yes, I love the exotics but there are many out there, the 1M should be entry level. While many hate having the same motor as a 135i, in 10 years when I have a service, parts will be much easier to find.

2. It has to have ///M Full lock diff.

3. It has to have serious brakes.

4. Keep, fixed setting suspension.
Again, lighter, cheaper to maintain and replace. Those that want it stiffer can replaced it without throwing away a brand new set of electronic shocks that cost double the money.

5. No Sunroof.
Like the fixed suspension, at some point you have to commit to performance, even though I love having a sunroof.

6. Bespoke Body
The 1M should not be a 135i with a add-on body kit. The wider sheet metal for the bigger rubber is not only makes it unique but it's functional.

7. Manual gearbox only
There are tons of slushboxes and Dual Clutch automatics. BMW needs to keep one car that is committed to the enthusiasts....one that has a price of admission..which is that you have to commit your whole body to driving the car! Car manufacturers make Halo cars that are for image and street credentials not just to sell. By keeping the 1M manual only, not any 15 year-old with a learner's permit can climb in and drive one, this is for people that are committed to the whole experience.

To phrase it differently with a question:
"You might not have considered purchasing (or might not have purchased) the 1M if [COMPLETE]"

For me, back in 2010/2011 the tipping point was the 1M body design. Without those curvy looks, it is very likely that I would still drive my M3, waiting for the M2.

And without the spectacular bulldog stance, I guess the 1M would not have become the commercial success it actually became.

But with all greatness we now (2013) know about the 1M global package (features/specs/merits/performance/price), a 1M 'dressed' with a 135is or 135i body (if technically possible - no 19" wheels) might make me reconsider.

On paper, the 135is is supposed to be the best E82 alternative for the 1M (http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=692366). But did that model sell like hot cookies too ?

While reading, I thought, that is exactly what tipped it for me; I did like the regular E82 looks, but it was dropped from the candidates list because of not having a locking differential, which is my 1M "Do NOT change".

4. Fixed suspension: I would have liked an EDC option (I guess this belongs in the M2 wannahaves thread) as this would have been the best compromise for anyone who would want even firmer front end, and some passengers that would like more comfort.

5. Sunroof: Personally consider it a big compromise to not have one and often think this is unjustifiably made into a perceived performance issue. Probably only Advevo's lap time might really be influenced. Besides the mythical E30M3 1M ancestor came US standard with a metal sunroof and at least in Europe had a glass sunroof as an option. According to ///M staff, sunroof and EU tow hitch certification were left off for marketing reasons.

Everything nachob mentioned and especially:

- bodywork and stance that fits the car's personality like a glove,
- balance between engine and chassis (levels of power and tq vs traction/handling capacity)
- manual gear box with M differential lock
- brakes
- surprising levels of comfort and practicality for such an aggresive looking and performant car
- Signature cold start sound
- the fact that it doesn't offer many equipment options to choose from and in mechanical areas it doesn't offer any; it is like the car itself, just take it or leave it

In principle, the roof requires more structural reinforcement for a moonroof. The 1M roof was not conceived for a moonroof and not crash tested accordingly. The possibility of a moonroof was excluded to keep a low center of gravity.

I would not change the charge pipe, even though it's poorly designed.
Sorry, had to go there.

Sorry for the

So far I'm concluding the E82 roof construction is equal regardless of sunroof option:
1 The RealOEM bodywork roof diagram show, except for the roof sheet itself, the exact same parts used for the 1M and other E82s (with or without sunroof option, S403A=Yes)
2 Glassoman's statement:

3 Images in above thread that show the default E82/ 1M roof construction has no crossbars underneath the sunroof area.

Having a decent body shop retrofit the OEM sunroof sheet would not be much of an enterprise, price tag excepted.

Wouldn't change : -

Unique M body
Diff
Special brakes
M suspension tune
Manual only
Limited numbers
Parts bin availability for future maintenance. ( Good point mentioned by OP )
Lightened flywheel. ( I would prefer even lighter )
Options list. Take it from stripper to all the fruit.
CSL type wheels. A lot of people comment on the wheels to me.
Compact overall size.
Everyday usability.
Inline 6 cylinders. ( My favourite configuration )

And most important - Fun factor
