Sooting Up

How long does it generally take for a new exhaust to soot/carbon up, tune its tone, deepen and lose the rasp?

I've just installed brand new N55 mids onto a brand new BMWPE Y-Pipe resonator delete and BMWPE axle-back. The thing crackles a lot and sounds extremely racey however, at the same time it sounds high pitched and raspy at times, especially on cold start where it sounds disgusting. Basically it sounds almost perfect while driving and warm but the rasp...meh so, can sooting up cure this or do I need to put the resonator on the N55 mids?

Do you N55 guys find this with your new BMWPE's? Albeit your stock mids probably have the benefit of a good carbon coating before hand.

This exhaust setup is on an N54 135i by the way.

It took about 2K miles before my Berk mids really settled in, same for my muffler...But with no resonators in place the rasp may not go away.

Wow, that's some time. I'm on stock DPs so I have hope it'll calm down.

Did your Berk Mids sound a little raspy at first?

Nope, when I first put them in they actually sounded pretty much identical to the N54 mids they were replacing, after about 50 miles or so they started to open up, but it was probably another month down the road before they really settled into the deep tone they have now. 0 rasp, and they cut down on the drone that had been present with just the meisterschaft muffler previous. IMO if you're going for a "race" axle-back and/or messing with the downpipes, a resonator is a must.

Roughly between 600-1,000 Miles, depends on how heavy your foot is on the throttle.

I'd go with zero, or as long as it takes for your ears to get used to it.

I don't think I could ever do a race style exhaust after this . It's very loud for 'stock' parts.

It's all gone now. I believe it was because I installed N55 pipes from new as well as the new PE and res-deleted. It was all new piping that needed running in which it now has; it sounds better than ever!
