pressing on the gas

when i press on the gas i hear a short whistle from the engine, is this normal? i thought it was the er chargepipe and tial bov, i removed them and placed back the stock chargepipe, and i am still hearing the whistling when i press on the gas.

Turbo whine?? Does it sound like a police siren? Mine does this too, especially when cold. Nothing to worry about if this is what you're hearing

I have this too. When I first give some throttle at lower rpms as boost is building. Has kind of an air leak sound. Dealer said it was normal....I don't know if I believe them though.

mine sounds like a whistle. when the car is cold and you start it, it would whistle and stop and whistle again. while i am driving, it also makes this whistling sound. when i press on the gas hard, i also hear this whistling sound. my car is now at the dealer getting checked out. it is a good thing i removed the chargepipe and bov.

It's probably the "sound generator."

I think that's normal, it's like siren/whistle when you press the gas pedal, I actually like that, one of the reason to have a turbocharged car is to listen to the turbo sound

I think it's normal too. I've had mine checked and all clear. My n54 135 never made as much whistle under light throttle inputs, but I was told as this n54 has overboost, the turbo whistles a little more (??). It can be really loud, grown to like it more and more. Would love to hear what it sounds like to someone on the sidewalk. Stop worrying and enjoy the turbo sounds! As long as it boosts okay...

A louder aftermarket exhaust will cure most if not all of your problems

i dont know, this whistling sound does not sound right. i wonder if it is a boost leak? i remember when i first purchased the car it did not have that sound. after the installation of the forge intercooler, afe intake and er chargepipe with the bov, that sound then appeared. the sound is coming from the left rear side of the engine. i keep wondering what it could be.

Mine wasn't there from new either. Only noticed it from the leftish side of the engine bay after 3k kms and a good run-in from a long trip. I thought it sounded like my turbos were on the way out! At 3000?! Been there ever since, boosts hard. Post a sound clip and I'll confirm if it's the same

I've heard that same sound and wondered about it. The dealer won't do anything unless theres a code thrown, and i think slight boost leaks probably won't throw a code. It could be normal though.

got my car back from bmw and they told me it is the afe sealed intake that is making the whistling sound due to more airflow. they said they check the car thoroughly and when they removed the intake the sound was gone. dont know?

now my car is back to stock, except for my intercooler and i am still hearing the whistling at start up when the car is cold and when you press on the gas. is this normal or could their be a turbo issue? does anyone with a stock 1m is experiencing this same annoying sound?

I'll try and post a sound clip of mine so you can see if it's the same. If it is, is nothing to worry about. Check out this youtube clip - 'n54 turbo sounds 2'

I remember being pretty worried when I first heard mine and thought it was turbo. Lots of net searching and dealer checks. General consensus is some turbos make more noise than others, but not a precursor to turbo failure. Maybe I've just been fed BS.
I figured if turbos fail, it's warranty anyway. Just take it easy with the boost until oil temps are above 80.

Anyone know how to post a sound clip?

it sounds like that, but i cannot understand why it sounds like that when i start the car without pressing on the gas. the whistling sound comes on when i start the car for about 2 seconds, goes away and comes back again within in a matter of seconds and lasts for another 2 seconds?

how many times do they need to tell you it's normal before you stop taking it in?

I have the same " issue. " Several others in this thread have indicated the same.

I think we all agree it wasn't there at 000 miles and probably are now not sure when it started. I get in the car and it still goes like stink.... no codes are being thrown, and it's still under warranty if anything DOES happen.... so I stopped worrying about it... perhaps you should as well .....

the car whistles at low power on initial startup and it is a little boomy at 2500 rpm (aka " drone"). Sounds like character to me... Consider it a badge of honor... and realize that on a cold start, you might be giving away it's turbo car as the motor has a slight whistle as you bilp the throtle waiting for the light to change with the import car next to you racing it's engine....

I love the drone! If someone took it away I would be forced to kick them in the knee caps.

i know right! I feel the same way about my turbo whistle!
I have a neighbor down the block with a 335.. and I have heard the same whistle from his car as he started up and drove down the block...

it's somtimes a little rattley but the whine is actually kinda badass and mean.. like a supercharger ..
