Tail light wiring?
Can anyone identify the wires running into the plug in the tail lights?
There are five (brown -- presumably the ground -- +4 others ) on each side. Specifically, I'm trying to identify for each side the wire color for the tail light, turn signal and stop. Thanks. Neil Last edited by MDORPHN; 10-20-2013 at 03:32 PM.. |

From the attached OEM tow hitch module installation instructions (sorry dutch version):
- image 082 0052 Z, page10, you can see the brake light is spliced around the passenger trunk hinge from a Black-Yellow (trunk 3rd break light) wire. - image 082 0053 Z, page 10, Blue-Brown at the passenger side rear light connector is the running (LED) rear lights connection. This Blue-Brown wire (As well as the 2 Can bus connection wires) already spliced at the taped up wire loom behind the module tray location depicted on the top image on page 10. These splices are clearly intended for tow hitch (and PDC) retrofits for the general E82 platform. EBA AanhangerKoppeling EDoc-456900333.pdf The TIS schedule for the rearlight connector will be searched and posted later. |

Still deliberating which mechanical version of the hitch I'm going with. If you have any side shots of your mount without the fender, those would be helpful. |

forgot to mention:
- the files are based WDS version 12 for cars as of 2007_9 - the connector at the passenger side tail lights is numbered X339 |

Good stuff, but -- unfortunately -- the wires on my car don't correspond to the colors indicated in the diagrams. Not a big deal, since pretty easy to check which wire is getting current for brakes, for directional signals and for running lights. I'll just need to check each wire on the right and left tail lights. I'll be using a Tow Ready ModuLite HD Protector, a circuit protected trailer light power module. I posted a couple of pix of my hitch here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=900446 Let me know what you're looking for and I can post some more. Thanks. Neil EDIT: FWIW, the five wires on the left side tail light connector (front top to bottom) are brown, green w/yellow, grey w/yellow, black w/purple and blue w/green. On the right side, they are brown, green w/red, gray w/blue, black w/purple and blue w/brown. EDIT #2: The above is for the larger connector. The three wire connector is as follows: left side -- brown, black w/yellow and grey w/purple; right side - brown, black w/blue and grey w/yellow. Done now! Bummer about the WDS V12 info not being up to date anymore. I'm trying to get the right stuff (ie LCI updated), but BMW has gotten much tighter on controlling access to TIS, WDS and EBA documents. If I do get the right stuff, which i'll check on my own car first for accuracy, I'll post it here for completeness sake. |

Wired 'er up and all is working properly
For anyone tackling this in future: Driver's (left) side: grey w/yellow = brake light blue w/green = turn signal grey w/purple = running lights On passenger (right) side, all you need is the blue w/brown for the turn signal. My 1M w/trailer is now ready to make its debut next weekend for an event at Summit Point. Neil |
