Need help: A new wheel set for winter tires

Hi all,

I wonder if you could give me some advises about a new wheel set.
I'm about to buy winter tires. Here in Maryland, we have only occasional snows and because I have SUV, the winter tires are mostly for cold, rain, and less than 1 inch of snow, unless I'm caught off-guard, or my wife take the SUV. After some research, I'm pretty much decided with Pirelli Sottozero 225/245 set, which looks a good compromise of dry/wet/snow performance, although I'm open to any positive/negative comments about the Pirelli.

Now I have to decide the wheels. I really like my current 313 and thinking about 269, which also look gorgeous and cheaper than 313. BMW sells them about $350. However, I just noticed that they are heavy (26lb)! With the same amount of $, Tirerack sells O.Z. Ultraleggera, which are only 18-20lb!

So, I guess my question is, why the OEM wheels are so heavy? Are they more sturdy? Is the difference of the unsprung weight of 6-8 lb noticeable? In general, what is the reputation of O.Z.?

I would appreciate any advises, suggestions, or comments here.

Thanks,

Susumu

O.Z. has a great reputation in performance wheels. Their products go through a pretty strenuous testing to ensure high quality.
You will definitely feel the difference in weight drop as well. Ultraleggera is a good choice, but I also like the Alleggerita HLT.
