135 Rare??
So I was perusing cars for sale and I noticed that a fair amount of dealers are labeling the 135 as "rare". You don't see them as often as other bmws, but I wouldn't call them rare. I know that there are less and less being cpo low mileage around and when I bought mine 2 months ago it was hard to find a 135 m sport with Nav, cpo. I searched for the red leather, but that was a proving almost impossible at the time. I am seeing more 135s listed, probably due to lease ends etc.

Actually, reading his post, he answered his own question/made his own point.

BMW sold 8 or 10 of the 3 series for every one series, but they aren't really scarce and resale value is slightly worse than a 3 series coupe.

Dealer ads typically say all sorts of misleading stuff... "rare" and "not as common as a Camry" don't mean the same thing. 1-series production volumes were relatively small compared to other cars. http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01...s-figures.html

There is rare because its exclusive & rare because it did not sell well. One flavor of rare is much better than the other.

I know at least in DC, 3 series are almost like Camrys... the 1 series being somewhat ugly, it kept many people away... to me this is a good thing as I know that I am driving the lightest and most unique modern BMW.

The predicted residual value for 1 series coupes was about the same as 3 series sedans and slightly worse than 3 series coupes. Current trade in values as reported by Edmunds are in line with the predicted residual values. Normally the trade in values would be a little higher and the difference is partially due to the 2 series. Used car values for high end cars are generally depressed because the strong economy is causing original owners to trade early. I suppose this discussion depends on what your definitions are. Nobody has left a note on my car telling me they want to buy it.

I live in Northern Virginia and 3 of the 8 cars on my street are 3 series e9x BMWs. It is indeed a very unique and fast modern BMW Last edited by highbrowed; 09-01-2014 at 04:41 PM.. |

i wouldn't call it 'rare' but i will say that 135s aren't that common to begin with. The majority of 1ers i see around NYC, at least, are 128i Convertibles driven by dweebs....
seeing a 135 isn't that common and i drive A LOT. is it "rare"? NO. but definitely not a dime-a-facking-dozen like the 335.....or 3-series in general which is basically as generic of a car as any other hum drum sedan, IMO. in 20 years time, the 128 and 135 will definitely be a car that people will WANT as a used car. I have no doubt about it. |

uncommon yes. rare no.
Majority I see are AW 128 convertibles. Ive only seen two other 135i's in my time. Lemans Blue and Another BSM like myn. And yes in DC the 3 series are just to damn common along with the 7 series. |

I think of something being referred to as 'rare' when it's extraordinarily unusual to find. It's not as common as a 3-series....that's for damn sure! Perhaps some of this has to do with the fact that some of my driving is outside nyc and into LI? different demographic completely than the boroughs |

Two of the boroughs are on LI
There are a few 135s on LI, but its mostly college age girls and middle age housewife's driving 128 verts. And they're always white for some reason. Uncommon is a way to put it. I'd say the rare moniker is OK for the 1M. But BMW produced 10-12K 1ers for 5 years in the US. |

I live in what seems to be the 1 series capital of the world, and I see an audi r8, Tesla, or lotus for ever 135 I see. Anywhere else I go I never see any.

I'm in Suffolk county on LI and some of the cars (Individually not combined) that I see with the same frequency that I see 135's are:
Vipers Ferraris Teslas Lambos ....and I'm ALWAYS looking for other 135s. 128i's are more common but are mostly verts driven by 50+ year old women. With that said I agree, it's uncommon, not rare. I consider a "rare" car to be a Ferrari F40.
