Doesn't change what a spectacular waste of time/money this project would be. If increased performance is your goal, the E46 M3 is a better car in ALL aspects than the 1 series.

This is why I have 30 liters of 10w-60 sitting in my garage and do 3k intervals on my E86. Anyways, the rear suspension design on the E82 is actually much better than an E46. Besides that the E46 can fit more tire, and basically do everything better. |

The S65 spins rod and main bearings by an inherent design fault. From the factory they are simply too tight and do not allow proper lubrication from the oil. The only real fix currently is the Dinan stroker kit, which uses different bearings all together. Otherwise you are just replacing with equally fail prone stock units.

And how many track miles/oil change intervals? My brother absolutely beats his car on the street and has ~10,000 track miles on it. He replaced his at 110,000 with coated ones.

Still isn't the norm for the S54, and the S65 still has a significantly worse issue seeing as people are spinning them as early as 10k miles on the rods and mains.

S65 bearings are a yearly replacement item for amateur series racecars.

I guess if put 40k miles a year.
Btw, internet resources are quoting S65 being light and all. S54 + 5sp trans is about 113lbs lighter than S65 + 6speed trans when cars are fully dressed. A racer friends just did a conversion from his CMod e30 with S54 to S65.

My S65 1 series weighs in at 3250lbs. Its a bit heavier than I was hoping it would be. The car is a track oriented street car with still working AC, electronics and other comfort features. The S65 sits further back than the n54 and the heavier tranny being low and near the center doesn't compromise the balance of the car. We took the car out yesterday to big willow for its first time out since the swap and Matt Powers put down a 1:31.3 even with it being his first time on that track. It is hard to describe to a lot of people about why I made this car. Most just say they N54 is better and easily tunable etc. etc. but my main focus of the car was balance. The S65 in the 1series chassis is seriously a match made in heaven. I know the n52 guys can quote rod bearing issues, which dont frighten me one bit, but I can assure you guys that aside from MPG and cheap upkeep, the S65 1series has everything you guys praise about driving your n52's hard x10. |

Go check out the rod/main bearing thread over on M3Post. They seem to be failing at any mileage.

Probably will be the e46 though, I'm too much of a sucker for Inline 6's. The smoothness gets me.

Both are great choices. I still want to add a white e46 m3 to the collection. |

E9x just became too much of a soft GT car. It is primarily why I went for the N52 1er over it.

yes, e9x is more of a compromise than the e46 in certain ways but for many people it was a welcomed compromise. everyone has their own intended uses. I agree they are a little soft out of the box but so is a 135i/128i.

Right, but soft/sloppy/compromised for comfort is what the 335i should be and is. With the E46 M3 as an example, and it is the same for the E36 and E3, you made comfort sacrifices for that increase in performance. It's to the point where there isn't much direct comparison between an E46 M3 and E46 3 series save a few trim pieces.

If the S54 came in a 2008 Z4 M, why can't it be legally used in a 2006 or 2007 E90? I thought the motor just had to be the same year or newer.
