H&R super sport springs
So I just got done installing the super sports. brand new set. The front looks great with slight tucking but the rear drop by barely half an inch. I'm really disappointed. Has anyone else had this problem? Maybe they sent me the wrong rear set? I'll post pictures later

If that's the case, hopefully the fronts don't settle too much more lol. I expected them to settle more in a few days but they claim to lower 1.6-2" in the rear. I can't see them going down a whole inch in just a few days or weeks

If the height changes an inch in a few days or weeks then something's put together incorrectly or the springs are junk. I doubt it as well.
You sure everything is clocked correctly, all parts are nestled properly in place, and / or that nothing was left that was supposed to have been removed? You really can't rely on their advertised #'s for drops, they don't know what car you have exactly - coupe or convertible, automatic or manual, etc. The different weights and balances will change how much drop you have. But they shouldn't be that far off. |

I've done quite a few suspension installs. Mostly have been Coilovers. This is the first time I'm installing just springs. Not to say I'm perfect and can't screw something up but it's pretty hard to mess up a spring install. I've already checked everything more than once. I'm getting an alignment this week, maybe I'll have them look it over just in case.

H&R have a rake to them but what you are explaining doesn't sound right. And I assume you double checked that they are seated properly, right? From my past experience with H&R springs I haven't been too pleased. I had a set for my R32 in the past and had the same issue you are explaining. I took them out and reinstalled twice and they would never get any lower. It had even looked like the rear got higher while the front tucked. I was so pissed that I just took them out and returned them as defective. Try contacting H&R.

That's normal with H&R sport springs, they lower your car more in the back than the front. It happened to me just this weekend when I installed mines.

Normal. Installed H&R Sports at one point and lowered the front a lot, to the point that the struts would bottom out easily. The rear still looked stock.. even with the rubber spacers removed. Horrible springs.

yeah I'm pretty disappointed.. I've always gone with coilovers. Figured H&R is a good aftermarket parts company so their springs must be decent. Guess I should have just stuck with Coilovers. Springs have left a bad taste in my mouth.

That is normal for H&R springs. I had them when I bought my 1 back in 2009. Had them on less than a year and switched to an Eibach Pro-Kit and the car was much more balanced front to back.

it's normal with ALL springs for the 135i. the rear is always too high. that's why I would buy a coilover system.
had a friend with a 135i with Eibach springs and the rear was also too hight. |

And the reason is:
1) the suspension bushings on all 5 rear control arms must be loosened and re-torqued at the new ride height, which means a trip to the alignment shop. The suspension bushings add significantly to the total spring rate and affect your ride height if not re-torqued at ride height. If your car is settling, it is most likely because you didn't do this and the bushings are gradually adapting to the abuse. 2) the OE rear shock body is long. As a result the OE bump stop is already engaged at the standard ride height (337 mm to wheel center, or 584 mm measured the BMW way to the wheel rim). When you lower the car, you lean harder on the bump stop, which resists your efforts to lower the car. You need a shorter rear shock and/or a shorter (and stiffer) bump stop to effectively lower the rear. |
