Trunk popped open this morning, why?

I started my car this morning, and when I drove off, the 'trunk open' light came on, and I stopped the car. The trunk lid pulled right up and was not latched when I checked it out. I had just driven the car around last night to go to the gym, and it was fine. I didn't touch the trunk all yesterday.

I've noticed these two screw looking things on the bottom of the lid and I think they can be adjusted. I also noticed the one on the driver side is out about 3/16" more than the on the passenger side. Could that be the issue? Has it happened to anyone else? It's a first for me . . .

And there is absolutely nothing in my trunk

Most likely you pressed the open trunk button when trying to unlock the car...

No I don't think so. Plus you have to hold that trunk release button down, which I didn't do . . .

Those adjusters properly align the surface of the trunk lid with the adjoining body panels (there are similar adjusters for the hood). You would have noticed if your trunk lid wasn't properly lined-up with the rest of the car (well, at least I would have), and so I doubt that's it.

(I realize this is stupid, but...) Is it possible you tripped the switch beneath the driver-side dash (by the hood release)?

don't think so. That's pretty easy to hear it pop open and I've never hit that by accident before.

I remember my brother was putting something in the trunk of my car and he slammed it shut. I was like WTF did you do that, and he said it didn't shut the first time, so maybe the two instances are related.

I have a few instances were it doesn't like to catch when it's really cold.

If I hit the trunk button again it will click and fix itself. Think it's done this twice now. But only in below freezing temps.

Maybe it was a one time thing. See if it happens again before you get too concerned. I rarely use my trunk and one time when I was just getting started and was driving away the trunk light came on. I stopped and got out and closed it and it never happened again. The night before I was in my trunk getting my owners manual to look something up. I probably didn't close it properly.

Maybe the latch isn't catching or doesn't like being slammed or could have been a fluke when your brother closed it a second time.

From what I've read on the forum, people have had issues with the key fob trunk release. They've said it's opened by barely pushing it but I've never had that happen to me either.

That's exactly what happened. I'm not too concerned

Maybe you left your car unlocked and someone opened the trunk.

Why is your paint so badly chipped on the edge of your trunk lid?

It's salt from driving in snow country.

I also suspect you accidently hit the key fob or trunk remote release. We have all done that before.

My trunk "feet" are sticking out about as much as your longer one is.

My trunk has done this about 3 times in the last 5-6 months. And at first I thought I accidentally hit the button but I don't think so.
