Power Steering Fluid reservoir overflow at the track ...
Hi Guys.
Any of you guys that track your stock or tuned 135i in intermediate or advanced groups, boil your power streering fluid, causing it to leak out from the reservoir lid? Other than CHF11s, is there such a thing as high performance or high temperature resistant PSF? Ive replaced my rubber o-ring some time ago, and will do it again. I hand tighten the lid, trying not to damage the O-ring. Tired of making a mess in the engine bay, and having to top off the fluid on a regular basis. Ive seen old-school solutions of putting an old sock to wrap up the reservoir to keep fluid from splattering around ... Not the safest, as that can wind up in your pulleys, belts, and radiator fan. One last thing, I do not get this issue on the street, only when lapping on the track ...

I have experience the cavitation or boiling of the fluid as well. Mine was only a little residue on the top of the reservoir. You could go the JDM route and get a reservoir sock like Spoon or Mugen the knockoffs are $5..

Will look into getting a generic wrist sweat band from local store, which will acoomplish the same thing. Did not expect this issue to be that common ... I had a spare o-ring lying around, so replaced old one with new. Im not sure if that will make a difference though, as the lid has a vent hole built into it. Probably where the mess comes from. Hard to confirm without a GOPRO aimed at it during tracking events ... Did you notice a "whining" noise that your power steering pump makes when coming off from a hard 20-minute lapping session, and the fluid is hot? Again, the noise is not present when the car is operated on the street.

... time to revert to a wrist sweat band, like a flashback from the eighties ... ;-) Used a sock before, and had to remove it during a track tech inspection, at one of the more "zealous" tracks I visit ...

I highly doubt though it's boiling. That I guess was my point (sorry, I posted from mobile)
A high G turn will easily spill the fluid out. See it all the time on BMWs for autocross. |

Makes sense. Do you think they designed the lid with vent hole to release pressure, or another purpose? Any harm in blocking that hole?

Look at what this guy fabbed up to solve this issue!
Will work on a solution similar to his this week-end ... http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=965436

Yes, I do believe the whole was designed as a pressure vent release (also, the system can autobleed itself, air bubbles can work themselves out and make their way up the lines to the reservoir, which is probably one of the reasoning why it's there). Also, as a typical expansion type tank system, fluid volume increases/decreases as it gets hot/cold I've seen people cover the hole, but I don't feel comfortable doing that. I honestly just carry a spare bottle along and fill as necessary |

I just did the mod from the E46fanatics forum. ( http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=965436).
Used a quick 1/8" vent tube to connect to the vent hole and direct the vapors/fluid elsewhere. I zip tied the tube in two places to secure it and prevent it from falling off into a risky area. Took 5 minutes to set up. Made sure to route the tube away from any high temperature components, wheel, tire, or brake areas. kgolf: Good idea on carrying a spare CHF-11S fluid bottle along with the rest of the ammunition when heading out to the track ... Here's my mini catch bottle contraption based on above DIY, good for at least 1 HP ...
