Installed MHD flasher stage I n54 map

cross posting this from e90post as I personally couldn't find a lot of info about MHD on this forum and had to venture elsewhere to learn about it

hopefully this helps anyone considering the app.

finally had a chance to install the MHD tuning flash today

installed stage 1 map. very happy with the results. car feels much stronger, especially in the higher rpm ranges. pulls much harder and is noticeably quicker.

total investment = $154.83 (returned the battery charger)

current specs:
  • 2009 135i N54
  • ~80,000 miles
  • completely stock, not even a walnut blasting yet

installation tools:

installation is very straight forward. made sure to use a battery charger as the entire process takes ~40 minutes and have read drops in voltages can cause errors.

no convenient electrical outlet at my apartment complex so had to run a long extension cable

#apartmentproblems

battery charger

cables

OBD-II cable lights up

MHD app automatically opens

Back up stock ECU map

Purchased flasher module and stage 1 map (this includes stage 1 and stage 1+)

Selected Stage 1 map to do "full write" - switch phone to airplane mode

Flashing process - at first the car chimes and a few different symbols pop up on the dash but goes away

Flash write completed - process took 39 minutes

It's actually so far without a doubt the best software for those who want to run a flash tune, AND the best way to flash a jb4 backend flash.

It cuts flashing time down drastically and its foolproof. The flash tunes on there are from wedge, so no doubt they make more power than COBB flashes.

If jb4 + backend flashes weren't a thing suddenly, I'd absolutely run a flash via MHD.

Whats the matter man, spend all your money on COBB or something? This forum rarely gets into actual tuning technogy discussion and is more about squeaky arm rest bs. I think the OP wrote up a nice little guide on how to make more power, easily, than all the other flash tunes. And for a 1/3 of the price.

Nice. Did not know there's thing like this. I guess the tune/map can only load into one car or one vin? If upgrade to other maps it's all different price?

Just did a bit of reading on the app. Dbchun, have u try the gauge function yet? Wonder how it looks.

thanks for the support guys. i previously had a chipped audi so knew that ecu tuning is a great bang for the buck and was debating on which tune to get for the longest time. was ready to spend $400-450 but this option came around and i'm very happy that i lagged tuning this car for so long haha.

yeah i think it's locked to each vin. each new map costs $39. there's also an option to have custom maps made but i'm not sure what the pricing is like. haven't tried the gauge function yet, i'll have to explore the other options today. will let you know!

Is that an LG G4? I have nearly the same setup except for a G3 and I've had no luck...

You are missing out on 20 min initial flashes, 2 min updates. Also improved race logic apparently. Supports up to 21 Psi I believe.

so the gauges and monitoring features are part of an add on purchase. haven't had a chance to install it but will probably do so tonight/tmrw. figure the option to monitor is useful and helpful for troubleshooting/custom tuning.

you're welcome, I have no regrets flashing. my car needs a walnut blasting as well, that's next.

ah right, this app is currently android only. have read a lot of ppl buying cheap tablets from Amazon to act as dedicated devices

yup it's a G4. might be the OBD cable, I had good luck with mine but I saw some reviews for the one that i purchased that said it didn't work. probably a result of poor QC made in china cables.

I am on my second obdII cable. Neither worked. I got a cheap, confirmed to work tablet coming in tomorrow and I'll test that. Thanks for sharing, I'm excited to get it working with my 1er.

I wish there was a way to test if it's the cable or the phone. My phone has worked with the OTG cable thus far for storing media onto a usb thumb drive.

After you copy your stock bin and flash for the first time with BB more flashes only take 5 minutes. not really worth it for me since my car won't ever see past 20psi unless I upgrade turbos

don't want to start any debates, i think it's just super cool we're using our phones to tune our ecu! i remember i had to mail in my ecu to get a chip soldered into it when i had my audi.

purchased the monitoring module for $52.07

this allows me to monitor and log up to 19 different parameters with saving to my device. i won't be messing with any numbers myself but this seems useful for measuring impact of new parts, diagnosing problems, and getting custom tunes made.

there are various gauge configuration options, for these pictures i selected the max number of gauges which is 8

drivers view... notice the lovely 93*F arizona heat at night?

screen at rest, i picked parameters that i understood (there are many options)

while driving, pic taken by passenger... pretty sure thats km/h lol

It is pretty cool and definitely a huge step forward. I would definitely prefer it over a Cobb also . With that being said I really like my jb4 + backend combo

no i don't think anyone has done a clear cut pre vs. post OTS MHD dyno yet

MHD Tuning shared a dyno from a customer with a OTS stage 2 map: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=798

and member csu87 has provided some nice comparisons using a virtual dyno, his baseline reading was 271whp and saw 319whp for stage 1: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1143516

a true before and after dyno comparison would be awesome. i've actually never done it myself, a quick google search shows local shop charging $60/half hour for a 2wd dyno - is that reasonable?

either way for me i'd have to wait for more parts and cooler weather, don't think any testing in 110*F would be ideal

$60 for a half hour sounds reasonable. We pay more than that but we haven't shopped around.

Great review!! Thank you for these very useful information. There has been quite a few Cobb owners selling up and moving to MHD. I think this will be the future.
