I wanted a manual E90 but I want my wife be able to drive it as well. So the solution...SMG. Considering the cost diff between the automatic and SMG, it's minimal.

These people are quite conspicuous because if they say SMG is a 'jerky' transmission, they obviously don't know what they're talking about...or, worst yet, they never suceed in learning how to properly use SMG.
2) All of the people I know who have went to SMG in the 5 series and/or the M series have never gone back to manual. SMG-I on the last E46 model simply sucked - read up on all the technical problems.
True!

I'm driving an e46 with SMG II for over a year now and it took me a while to get used to it. After a short testdrive I may heve never bought it because it really felt jerky at first.

But now I love it and enjoy it every day:

1. You always have your hands on the steering wheel, perfect for fast trips on the Autobahn.

2. Very fast shifts in sport mode

3. Automatic mode for heavy traffic or when too lazy to shift, you adopt to the slower shifting and different timing automatically.

I would never want to go back to manual or steptronic, but my next company car will be 320d, so no SMG available.

Hopefully BMW will introduce ZSG soon!

Folks,

I'm a BMW dealer and I get all the latest product updates via email from BMWNA's Distribution and Product Development departments, and I have yet to hear or see anything that makes it seem like we're getting SMG any time soon. Everything that I've read has indicated that it was initially planned (before the official release), but after that they made the decision that it would not be offered. All of the info that you've posted (E90 booklet, owner's manual) were put together before the car was launched and before the decision was made to not offer SMG.

Unless someone has some new information that I don't have, I'm going to have to say that SMG is not going to happen at this time, at least not for the remainder of MY06.

Yeah, WeatherBand is in the manual too. Doesn't mean we have it, or that it's planned.

I am convinced that the SMG is not available on E 90 cars, at least in the U S market. Does anyone have one or at least a build sheet indicating that one is in the pipeline? If not, let's drop it. <G>

I know nothing about SMG, but notice the tiny nub of a shift lever in the center console. What does that do and how does it function?

Basically it selects drive, reverse or neutral

You can also shift with it, but main shifters are bottons added on the steering wheel ( M cars have padels )

Interesting. No park? So it's like a manual without the clutch?

Its a manual gearbox with a electronically controled hydraulic unit that changes the gears and works the clutch

So with SMG you can stall your car by bogging the engine, just like you can with the "regular" manual?

System should pull in the clutch to prevent it
