1M from London to Florence, Italy
Any route tips for driving in late July down to Florence?
I can take upto two days for the drive each way. Would like to take in some Alpine passes. Wondering whether traffic will be too heavy or if it is worth the extra distance/time at that time of year - are there any other routes that might be quieter and just as good? Best places to stop? Is it worth trying to drive into Monaco/Nice en route or will it be too busy?? Going with Ms Shost so won't be trying to set any speed records! |

The Dolomites (Northern Italy) are worth the detour.
UNESCO World Heritage. In one word: extraordinary. Maps: http://www.dolomitibellunesi.com/wp-...2/dolomiti.jpg http://www.hikenow.net/images/cortin...on-map-030.jpg

Artemis I have to stand in this exact place someday. I spend a decent amount of time hiking in the Wasatch mountains in Utah, but this is in a completely different league.

Maybe you should forget whatever business you have in Florence and just drive back and forth over the Alps!

You have some great advice from Artemis and Dakel etc. When I did delivery of my 1m in August 11 we started at Grossglockner and ended up spending three days going West (furka) and ended up in the Dolomites and of course Passo Stelvio. You will not want to leave .... Best part of our trip by far even over the ring!

Thanks for the tips. Will have a look at these options. Can't wait. Think Furka Pass is very much en route. A friend is putting us up in Freiburg, so will head into Black Forrest too!
And yes already wondering about leaving early from our Villa for extra days driving! |

Aussie, when did you guys travel? remember wishing I had joined this trip at the time.
How comes none of you have GB stickers for Switzerland or head lamp converter stickers. totally don't want to plaster my car with them but don't want my trousers pulled down either. Looks like I'll be cutting through Balon des Vosges national park, mid and southern black forest roads onto Zurich then take on Klausen, Furka plus San Bernadino then onto one of the great lakes. Hoping to stop off at either Monza or Ferrari Museum on either out or inward journey. Will be driving solo too ? |

I read somewhere you need GB sticker for Switzerland so bought a pack of 5 static non adhesive ones for £1 off ebay just in case. Didn't do anything to the lights but drove mostly in the day anyway.
my plates don't have the gb plates but the gb EU sticker came with my headlamp converters that I didn't use... |
