245/40-17 on 17x8.5 et41 Rear - Rolling/Camber?
Hi All,
Did a bit of searching, and most conversation seems to be focused around mods needed to get 245s in the front. I'm looking to install 17x8.5 et41 wheels in the rear with 245/40-17s. Should I plan for more camber in the rear, and/or rolled fenders? - BMWP springs. - All else stock, no M3 bits. - Alignment settings TBD (its a daily driver so nothing too aggressive). - Also planning on upgrading the RSFBs around the same time as installing the new wheels. Would this help mitigate the tendency to rub due to reduced subframe movement? |

I did see that. "Rear rolled fenders and/or rear negative camber may also be required" isn't exactly definitive.
A real-world anecdote or two would help. |

That said you will be fine as your setup is also identical to mine. To be specific, I am also on BMWPS with the following: - I'm using 12.5mm spacers on stock 8.5" wheels which is 1.5mm more effective offset than yours. - A 245/40x17 tire is virtually identical to the 245/35x18 tire of the same brand See below for pics of charts and pic of fender clearance. |

Thank you! For the chart as well, I was literally plugging that all into a fitment calculator as you were making the second post.
Totally understood on the tolerances and car-to-car/wheel-to-wheel/tire-to-tire differences. Basically trying to make sure I'm in the right ballpark. To that point, I did throw the wheels on the car to eyeball the fitment, but it wasn't all that helpful because: a) I'm currently on 123k-mile base 128i suspension. I plan to install new BMWP suspension along with the wheels in the spring. Plus address any worn out bushings. b) The wheels have bald, horribly dry rotted tires on them so I can't safely test drive them on the existing tires. |

What are you doing for front wheels and tires? It's much more of a fitment challenge than the rears. If there's room, add a small spacer for a wider track. Also consider adding rear subframe inserts. Removes the floaty feeling of the rear suspension in corners. https://whitelineperformance.com/pro...8873293c&_ss=r |

It's a staggered setup, and the fronts are only a 225/45-17 on a 7.5" wheel.
I figure I'll get everything mounted and see if adding front spacers makes sense. I'm considering the M3 control arm setup at some point, which I understand will slightly widen the front track, so it will be good to have some room to grow up there. I have the subframe bushing tool, so I'm planning to completely replace the bushings with the M3 bushings. Nothing wrong with inserts, but at the mileage on this car it seems advantageous to completely replace. |

Just because threads without pics are lame, below is the somewhat-useless test fit.
Car has the base suspension w/ 123k on it still, so not a useful comparison to what it will be with new BMWP parts. The 1998 tires still seem to sort of hold air. Probably not everyones cup of tea, but I've always liked these wheels. Got a good deal on a set of 5 (there's an extra front) that were removed from the car at 17-18k miles and sat in storage since. |

Post your experience with the M3 subframe bushings. I had my choice of two projects: new valve cover/eccentric shaft sensor, OFHG...or rear bushings. I chose the former for my next project, but the bushings are next.

Definitely will! I'm looking forward to giving this car a bit of love beyond basic maintenance.
This coming year will be 6 years of it being a solid daily driver for me. Total of 12 years on crappy roads in the northeast, some new/upgraded parts should feel nice. |

Throw some camber plates up front and aftermarket toe arms in the back, set the car to -3 camber all around and send it. EZPZ.
