BMW Group will launch their most fuel efficient and cleanest car ever later in 2009. The new BMW 116d gets a remarkable 64.2mpg, with CO2 emissions at just 118 g/km.
Using the same, albeit detuned, diesel four-banger as the 118d and 120d, the new car will be pushed around with 116hp. The engine also produces 192 ft-lb of torque at 1,750 rpm, giving the three-door a 0-62mph time of 10.2 seconds. As a five-door the car reaches 62mph a tenth-of-a-second slower. Top speed for both is 125mph. Its Band B rating, a ranking based on emissions testing, which means the car will cost its new owner only £35 per year in taxes. The new BMW 116d three-door starts at £17,605, including taxes and license fees. BMW's five-door version starts at £18,135. Sales for the clean duo begins in March 2009. |

UK mpg aren't the same as in the US. Keep that in mind. 1 UK liquid gallon = 1.2 US gallons.

BMW should just make a value brand called something else, not BMW.
I'm all for releasing a $16,000 value brand, and I'm not a badge whore, but something about a $16,000 BMW seems like it might dilute the badge more than it already is. ![]()

Where did you guys get $16K from? The GBP 17,605 price in the UK translates into $25,000 at current exchange rates.
Also, you have to understand that the market in Europe and UK is completely different than the US. People there drive much smaller cars and most engines are 2.0 L or smaller. I was there recently in Europe riding in a Passat Wagon with a 2.0 L TDI. We had five people in the car and the back full of luggage and were regularly doing 160 Kph without a sweat. The driver did several pulls to 180 and 200 when the road opened up and I was blown away by the engine's power. |

I set my cruise at 200 km/h typically. At night and/or low traffic, even faster. It's all what you're used to...

54 US MPG is fine for me. They'd release it for $16k because they always give the US cheaper prices. -->Less tax, more buyers.
If our gas was ~$5 a gallon right now, I think most Americans would be driving 2.0L or smaller engined cars. Last edited by vgame64; 01-10-2009 at 07:16 PM. |

Because there are countries other than the US on earth, and in some places gas costs twice as much as it does in the US...

+1. What's wrong with having BMW driving dynamics with an efficient engine? If you want HP get a muscle car!

Once the recession passes and demand for oil goes back up, you'll see prices go back up to > $4 a gallon.

Exactly. Whoever thinks the current gas prices will stay this low is a dumbass. A car this efficient will sell like hotcakes, especially if it's at $16k, which I doubt it will be. It's be the new entry vehicle for BMW.

hi

the brand is already diluted with teenagers with their parents money, asians, and luxury ricer non-car enthusiasts. don't worry about the brand being diluted further.

BMW is a value brand. You get performance, quality and luxury all in one package for 60-70% cost of a Porsche. Shesh get off the high horse

Whether it's about performance, luxury, or fuel economy, BMW is about A+ engineering. Why kid ourselves into thinking that a company that's trying to run a business would want to pander their products to some "exclusive demographic"?
I admit that when I was growing up, BMW carried this stigma as being an elite club to me, but it all went away when I test drove one and fell in love with it. Now I have appreciation for well-engineered cars and now only want to drive cars as such! BMW cars consist of quality and value, and the company is good at what they do! Do I think this brand is being "diluted"? Well, I don't care because I WANT more people to be driving well-engineered cars whether it's because of the brand name or because they appreciate quality. It only raises the bar for all the other car companies. Why should anyone owning a BMW need to think they are somehow particularly special? We shouldn't because it only feeds to the image that we're stuck-up douche bags. P.S. I'm Asian. I do realize that I'm kind of a stereotype in the Bay Area owning a BMW, but let's not hate or hurt one another. |
