Summit Point Pics

I'm attending the Delaware valley BMWCCA driver school this weekend at Summit Point WV. For the weekend, we are driving on the smaller Jefferson circuit, which is great for novices like myself.

I have no pics of the 1er in action, but here are some shots of other cars on the track.

My 135i ran on the track in an almost stock configuration, the only mod was H&R sport. I'm in the novice group, but the stockish 135i had no problem overtaking e36 and e46 M3's.

Tomorrow should be a nice day so I will try and take a lot more pics/possibly in-car vid, and I will try get some someone to shoot the 135i in action.

asv,

Thanks for the pics. I look forward to a complete write-up on the weekend once you get a chance.

How long are your sessions and what kind of oil temps are you hitting?

20 minute sessions, I'm seeing about 255-260ish with OAT around 80-85. Its stayed quite cool at this point, but Jefferson isn't that demanding. I will probably beat on it a little harder tomorrow, but its expected to be a cool day.

Id love to do this but I dont want to risk damaging my new car. Can you take it on the track and not race?

Well the BMW CCA driver school is not really a race per say. You have to give a hand signal in order to be passed. More info here:

This is probably why I had no problem on Jefferson with oil temps. I pulled it in for tire 'failure'. RFT overtemp/pressure and the weather was colder the begining of April.

Friday at the track on the main course -- the left-front-tire and the brakes gave up before the oil temp became a problem. The brakes were smoking; but not that hot, rotor temp was 570F after getting out with IR gun (but no cool down lap). Audi runs no fade about 700+ with HPS and the 911 is 800+ HT10 or PF97 (no fade). This is just annecdotal information, not scientifically collected; but for a serious weekend at the track, you will have more fun with some performance pads like Hawk HPS. I don't think you need anything more serious then that for starting out. But you need to keep a close eye on your left front tire, if you don't have a pyrometer, at least keep the pressure below 42psi.
