I am awaiting my 128i cab and I have the chance to purchase the 'tire & wheels' warranty.
I believe i will be purchasing this from the Canadian dealer for just $794 as supposed to a third party (http://www.twinkidneygrill.com/Home.html) for $699. My decision is based on all the postings regarding the life span of run-flats (30K or so) and cost of 300 to 400$ and up for single tires. However, for winter tires I am thinking of a couple of non-dealer options for myself which have cornered me to my final decision. 1. Purchase winter tires from the dealer. Approx costs starting at 1595 + tax. Live with the fact that winter tires may also be RFTs. And have to switch back in summer. 2. Purchase all-season (non-run-flat) tires from a non-dealer and install them on the OEM RIMS. Of course, switch back to RTFs for summer. 3. Purchase all-season (non-run-flat) tires from a non-dealer along with new ASA/CLS or other type of alum/chrome RIM. Carry a spare and jack. Which i can use year round and place the RFT at the end of lease prior to returning to the dealer. In all, choices are limited. And so I wonder if anyone has thought of the above for winter and will the possibility of options 2 or 3 result in a void of the manufactures and/or road hazard warranty? That is keeping in mind other items like sensors that monitor tire pressure & other. Some posts have suggested that on a sports package, regular air tires will affect the car's performance somewhat. I am not sure to what degree that is really true if you have same size tires. Or just the opposite would also be false when dealing with winter tires which may be a RIM size smaller. It would ready suck to have the dealer say we can't cover your RIM because you used non-oem tires. OR the winter tires were not BMW approved/authorized. Open for discussions..... Thank you in advance. /jt |

If you will be driving in snow/ice, the first choice is dedicated winter tires - preferably on their own wheels so that the twice a year changeover is relatively easy. The "Q" rated tires will give maximum snow/ice traction and the "H" rated models will be better on dry roads. If you opt for non RFT winter tires, you might consider carrying a compact compressor and plug kit, rather than dedicating most of your trunk to a spare.
If you won't be driving in snow, and want "all-season" tires, you might check out the RFT Conti ProContact SSR tires. They were OEM on some E90 models, are reasonably priced and have gotten very good customer feedback according to the Tire Rack. The only real problem is that their website doesn't yet show a 205/50/R17 size for the front. Tom |

Thanks Guys.
Yes, the purpose is to drive in snow and ice with all season tires. And i was just checking if rather than purchasing only snow tires, I can just get a whole set of nice looking RIMs and non-rft at the same time. The approach, well, as if I got the can with no tires or rims basically. Still, I am not sure about warranty issues. With snow tires and rims if they are not dealer provided, will that cause something to the reg sched maintenance by the dealer. I just don't want to get in trouble after gone out of my way to purchase all these extra coverage etc. thks |

Doing so does not void the warranty, despite what my uninformed salesperson claims. You can still call BMW Roadside Assistance if you get stuck in the winter. BMW doesn't have it's own company. It'll just randomly dispatch a two truck driver to help you out. When I tried this service once, I found the tow truck driver couldn't be bothered by any specifics, he just tried to help me in anyway he could. Think about it, if you were the tow truck driver, would you read the pages of rubbish BMW writes for them? The two truck drivers are only concerned about simply helping you and then going on their way.

I know i'm being a little obtuse and blunt but there really is no beating around the bush on this subject. Summer tires for the summer and winter tires for the winter. |
