How do you use a GPS to measure 0-100?

I've often read in forums that you can use a hand-held GPS to measure 0-100kmh times. I've not been able to find how to do this.

Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.

I don't think many or any regular Nav GPSs can do this. There are performance measuring devices out there that are GPS based though.

just pick up an escort gt-1 for $40 from amazon. it lets you know the 0-X speed in intervals of 10, and it also tells you what acceleration numbers you are pulling in each gear. very easy to check if a tune has made even the most minor difference with that feature, because its not launch dependent. very consistent.

Own a Nokia SmartPhone (N95 and alike), download a free program called racechrono.

If you get a 5Hz GPS like Qstarz extreme BT-Q818, it will be more accurate. I also use a OBD bluetooth sensor to read the OBD reading as well.

Manage to test WAY's car under 5 sec from 0-98kmh.

Does racechrono take into account the lag in re-transmitting the co-ordinates from the gps unit to the phone/computer via BT?

Because surely the BT would add a significant amount to the latency?

Does it matter? if the lag is constant; 0-100 will still be the same. I mean if there is a lag of detecting the starting point, if the same lag happens at 100kmh, that is ok. So it is not the major problem here. From experience looking at the GPS speed itself on screen. It is very quick and almost instant.

The problem is really getting the GPS realising the car is starting off from standing start. Most GPS unit has static navigation function so when they plotting graph in traffic and do not plot too many dots around a static point (when the object/car is motionless). That is why never use the internal GPS on the N95 for the 0-100kmh, rather do 80-120kmh or something similar.

That is why Antii from RaceChrono incooperate the OBD function. The OBDkey can get 4Hz in most car (and in my RX-8 I manage to get 8Hz), so they update data a lot of times. It will be more accurate.
EDIT: OBD = on board diagnostic unit. It will get the speedo from the ECU itself.

The unit is best when use in lap times; it is proven even in the 1Hz mode that the lap time is within 0.1 second of the AIMS infrared transponder or the real magnetic transponder on the racetrack (natsoft ones).

Errr...well, I'm lost.

I've been setting the speed limit warning on iDrive to 100kmh and telling the wife to hit GO on a stopwatch when I bury the accelerator and STOP when she hears the "ding ding" - too simple??

You could always just use the stopwatch in the idrive

taka, I understand that, but there's going to be a lag when trying to hit a certain speed etc. But if it's getting data from the OBD then that's sorted that.

You'd think the Performance Steering Wheel would have a 0-100 measurement function??!!

I will take your offer of driving one a day. I will bring my phone, OBDkey and GPS to test it out. I need a manual one to compare with, Wayne's was tuned when I tested his.

Indeed it does. And 400m and 1/4 mile times. Hopefully I find out how to use it in 5 weeks time...

just read in wheels that the iphone has some program that can calculate times and gs using its accelerometer (???). no idea how accurate it is though.

Yes it does. It is called Dynolicious. The limit of the iPhone accelerometer and in built GPS is kind of make me wonder if they can achieve any accuracy. Anyhow...

Track day is much better then dynolicious.

We were using it down at PI on the grid to test the accuracy. It seemed somewhat accurate. Not being able to log the g-forces though was annoying.
