"Love the colour!" - Why discontinued?

Hi guys,

Every person that's seen the wheels since I got it have said, without exception, "love the colour". So, does anyone have any ideas as to why BMW have discontinued Sparkling Graphite Metallic (SGM)?

I've seen the theories in the other areas of the BBS (oops, showing my age there), just interested in the Aussie view.

BTW: I love it too!

Dunno. Was really popular in the US and Europe as well. I prefer SGM to the Space Grey myself. Someone in Marketing playing God I suspect

Other models are still available in SGM, yes? I could see it if the color was really EOL'd across the brand, but it sounds like they just quit offering it on the 1.

They are making SGM more exclusive. It will be dropped from 3's as well.

I read somewhere that they may be reserving it for M vehicles. Whatever the case it makes my Year 1 One even more exclusive than before!

I checked all the M cars (in the US) for 2009 and none have SGM. The color is just no longer available on any BMW.

Well my other guess would be its a cost-cutting move since it was a complicated type of color and therefore more expensive to use. When I got my peformance skirts and spoiler painted it took them longer than usual because the paint was so difficult to color match.

I remember seeing somewhere a translation of a german article that claimed environmental side effects of the production and application of SGM blah blah blah ,...

My dealer also claims that all 'non-core' colours are retired according to schedule regardless of their popularity to make sure that new models do not look 'old'

I'm so glad I got my 135i vert in SGM. Black would have been my only other choice.

My two cents

Good question - have you tried asking BMW themselves ???

I do know that manufacturers discontinue and re-introduce for their own marketing reasons, very popular or very well selling colours...and they will discontinue a very poor selling colour.

Was the SGM a good seller to begin with ???

If not, that may very well be the reason :iono:
