What about using HID bulbs in the halo assembly? - BMW 1 Series Coupe Forum / 1 Series Convertible Forum (1M / tii / 135i / 128i / Coupe / Cabrio / Hatchback) (BMW E82 E88 128i 130i 135i)

I just installed a set of the 7500K GP Thunders in my car but they aren't no where near as bright as the stock bulbs.

so I was wondering if it would hurt anything to use HID bulbs in place of the GP Thunders?

Don't know if this has been tried yet. I think it would be possible. There are 35 watt hid systems now and in an H8 size.

Check this site out. H8 35 watt hid, multiple kelvin range, lifetime warranty for $70.

You can do it but the problem is that an HID setup is so powerful that tends to bleed outside of the rings. We tested this on an E92 and unfortunately it was so bright that they didn't even look like rings once installed.

One of the guys on E90post was able to pull this off. It looks great actually. It might be a little too bright on the outer ring, but it'd definitely daytime available. You can look at some of the vendors around here, and they will probably carry some sort of HID kits with H8 35W. During the night, you'll have your xenon's on anyway, so the HID won't be as bright. Seems like a waste of money, since you can get the same effect with halogen bulbs.

Personally, I think xenons on anything but the headlights is a waste of money.

At this time, there is no way of fixing that difference in the equal brightness of the headlights. It's just how it's designed on all new BMWs. The new E92s were made that way, and this was a huge discussion. Just give it some time--there's an LED solution on it's way for the E92, and if we're lucky, it will be compatible with the 1-series if the design is similar.

What about that angel brite thing? (I hope I got the name right). Is it just for pre-facelift 1 hatches?

Also worth nothing is that blue lights on the front of your vehicle are quite illegal, at least in Texas (and I suspect in every state). I had an officer give me a warning for some fog lights that were much less blue than the pic above.

Yep, the prefacelift cars used a specific fit angel eye unit. The new 08s+ use an H8 bulb that is not compatible with the older units.

Actually guys, the brightness isn't the only issue...

The MAIN issue is bulb out errors and voltage problems.

The car will obviously throw a bulb out error since the HIDs consume a fraction of the power.

Furthermore, when you turn on the headlights, the voltage going to that bulb changes, which will probably (not sure) cause the HID kit to flicker and fail prematurely.

The only way to do this is to put a resistor on that circuit (or leave the bulb dangling... hahaha) to "trick" the car into thinking there is a normal bulb there... then running a relay with power directly from the battery and the trigger from that circuitry... and hope that the decreased voltage still triggers your relay, which it probably will.

It's a bit hairy. Just wait a few months. A company in Taiwan has a RIDICULOUSLY bright solution coming out, but they won't let anyone buy it (or even look at it uninstalled) until all their patents clear. Should be another month or two.

That also depends on your area. In my city, front plate and no rear reflector and similar vehicle violations are not dismissable if you resolve the issue. Once you get the ticket, you gots ta pay. Ask me how I know.

We've tried it months back - it's much to bright and produces way to much glare to oncoming traffic. Excessive heat would possibly be another factor.

Bulb output is not the issue here, it's a limitation of the ring design - this is a reason why the GP thunders hardly do anything but change color temperature. Looking at the design, you can see the inner projector is a simple half plastic ring. The outer projector has a fiber ring, thus requiring more light (from the same light source) to achieve the same output as the inner lamp.

Errors aside, a brighter light source will only intensify what is already present - uneven light output from the rings.

We're looking into an alternative solution of our own - and have a couple of ways of going about it. We'll post more info as we get further into development.

i tried it with a 35w kit and it did run because it would throw errors so i used cambiss fixture and it wasnt running. kept throwing errors.
then i used a 55w kit with cambiss fixture and it became very bright but the adaptive headlights would never work
and 55w will eventually melt your headlight fixture.
i have a tried in the exterior modifications
you should look at it. but it also depends on what kit you used
