That is so sad... seems like everyone is a wannabe M3 owner.

Oh I do understand the speed aspect, and the overall engineering but unless you are gonna go on a track you have no need for it. Honestly you better upgrading to a 135i if you just want something more than the 125i

And personally I prefer the 1 series design over the current 3 series design. But that is gonna vary.

That's not true at all. Everyone's making a pretty obvious choice here between a slower car and a fast one. There are more than a couple 135i owners on this forum that would be driving an M3 right now if they wanted one, myself included. The choice here isn't between a 135i and an M3 though.

the only thing i will say is it may be cheaper to just take a 135i and Dinan Stage 2 that sucker. I do like the smaller size over the M3

It's a fairly easy DIY job on these cars, costs about $200 for the parts. Easily worth it for the sound and feeling at 8000RPM of one of the best engines BMW has ever made.

The OP is deciding between a 125i (128i) and an M3

Damn all those M3 owners out there who don't take their cars on a track. Such wasted potential

do you own M3?
how sure of that are you?
and to OP, the joy of driving can't compare to increased payment of gas...
I wish I can afford one...... hopefully in few years

I'd say if you can get the M3, don't pass it up. However...

or

Do I stick to my economical (well against the M3) 125i where I have more than enough power for day-to-day, the amazing new idrive, and more cash in my pocket than if I went for the M3?
At the risk of sounding presumptuous, you seem to value the economy of the 125i over the considerable performance advantage the M3 offers. Nothing wrong with that. You know the power is there, but will you use it on any normal enough basis to justify the outlay (and decreased economy)?
One thing to keep in mind is that at most sane and legal speeds, a slower car could very well feel more fun than a much faster, grippier car. The 125i will likely relay sensations of speed (leaning, scrubbing tires, engine rpm's, etc) much earlier than the M3. Did you drive these two cars head to head yet?

As for the rear seats, is this M3 the E90 sedan? The E92 coupe doesn't offer that much more space; I seem to recall a fair bit more legroom, but the seating position seemed higher with less headroom than the 1er.
Personally, I consider the smaller external size of the 1-Series a big plus over the 3. But if you regularly carry back seat passengers and it's a 4-door M3, then that is a very important consideration IMO. Not just in terms of space but in terms of passenger access.
