Why is everyone so adamant that it be called "M1"? Who cares what the hell they call it as long as the performance is there.

Someone should start producing M1 badges...just to spite BMW..if they choose not to use M1. That supercar named M1 will never be seen by 95% of BMW owners... and if they ever decide to build another supercar it can simply be named DAS "M".

Dear BMW;

Please do not badge my car as I will badge it myself

I bet the public will refer to it as M1 and not whatever BMW decided to call it.

Because the perception will be... that it's just a bastardized 135i and not a true M car.

I'm not hung up on badges, I just don't want to go through the BS of explaining why BMW did what they did to every frickin person that says, "If that's an M car, why didn't they call it an M1?"

More for my own sanity.

Yes. I don't quite understand the fear about calling it an "M1". The original M1 was made 30 years ago and was produced for 3 years. If using names (really an alphanumeric combination) that had been used on different cars in the past is so verboten, why didn't anyone make a fuss about the re-use of "328"?

Is anyone seriously *not* going to buy the car because it was called an "M1"?

Hell, it's not like BMW didn't have any problems bastardizing the "M" name by slapping it on farm equipment anyway. That was the real crime!

I also feel that the proper name for it is "M1" but have a felling it will be called "M1tii". But in my E88 rendering, I decided to just put an M1 badge for fun.

Will they drop the M1 moniker for the hot E82 only?
Will the next gen 1 series M be M1 or follow the E82 version? Surely they have to stick with the same name for this and future generations.

That would suck big time for E82 "M1" owners if they changed it.

BMW's recent name choices (name by customer clinics vs logic?) have definitely be questionable. I point specifically to the "Z4 sDrive35i" and "Z4 sDrive35is" or X3 xDrive, etc...

Those are some very longish names that don't encapsulate all the descriptors of what the car is when compared to the tried and true system (325i -- 3 series, 2.5liters. M3 = 3 series by the motorsport division).

Since the trend is to get weirder and weirder with the names, my guess would be that they name this car 135tii M. (And maybee why the car won't have some 'signature' M parts such as quad tailpipes and side gills)

That would be a complete shame on two levels, One) it makes less sense then "M1" assuming the car is indeed engineered by BMW M division. Two) You loose a whole lot of name recognition (read: sales) by moving to a new name. This is reminiscent of when Ford dropped the famed "Taurus" name and used new names like Ford Five Hundred, and in the process lost so many sales for what was essentially the same exact car. Now Ford is going to be spending the better part of 10 years to rebuilt the Taurus name back to where it was when they dropped it. At some point BMW will probably come around and decide to use the M1 moniker and have to start from scratch down the road

Committees and clinics are great, but they are only a tool and you have to go against them sometimes!

Heres to hoping BMW makes the right decision and goes with M1!

I'll probably be de-badging if I get one anyway, so I could care less. I'm most interested in how much lip I can get under the fenders...

I still hold to the belief that they'll just call it the "M" and it'll be known as the "M Coupe". Don't know what they'll call the vert since it can't technically be a roadster with a back seat... *shrug*

If you think about it it kind of makes sense that they'll just leave it at M. The 1 series was supposed to "recapture the essence of the original 2002", so I could see their whole marketing campaign being about "recapturing the essence of M"...
