Scott said they did surveys and most people thought it should be named M1 to the point where Scott suggested BMW may have to bite the bullet. It seems like BMW went against what the surveys and research says. That's just stupid.

M Coupé makes no sense for the M1 Coupé (E82). Scott said at the FIZ there is an M1 Convertible (E88). So how will they call that one? M Roadster? It has four seats. M Convertible?
M Coupé = M6 Coupé, M3 Coupé M Convertible = M6 Convertible, M3 Convertible |

I personally would be disappointed if they called it the M1. The original M1 was a mid-engined racing car built for the road. Some may even call it a supercar of its time. I don't think our little 1series right now can live up to the prestige of the M1 title.
I wouldn't mind it being called the 1M, however I would think that is too close to 3M tape, lol. 135M wouldn't be bad either. But honestly, the 1series shouldn't get the M1 badge. I think that title belongs to a supercar, if BMW decided to make one. |

I'd say that, by not naming it the M1, BMW has something of a marketing challenge ahead. A lot of people will pay more for an ///M car than they would a 135TiiSDrive///M Sport blahblahblah simply because "it's an ///M".

Call it the "M", no number, and make it the fastest car they have ever created (obviously not happening), so that when they market "'M', the most powerful letter in the world", it means something again. Then after this quick 2 and a 1/2 year run, go back to a smaller, less powerful Mwhatever, M3, M5 and so on however they want. Let this be a short mythical run!

"The X5/X6 performance models will not be badged ///M" ----> Finally they are.
"The performance 1 Series modell will not be called ///M1" ----> And, of course, where it had not to be, they keep their promise. |

I wouldn't buy a 135M or M135. That simply states to me that they half-assed it.

Since the majority of people seem to be annoyed or upset about the M1 name not being used, who is BMW making happy by not using the M1 name? I wonder if they took the time to think of it from that point of view. If anything this hurts the car more than it helps.
I'm 25 and before I saw the whole naming discussion surrounding the M1/1M/M135 a few months ago, I didn't even know that there was a BMW M1 supercar that had been built in the 70s. I've never seen one in person.

I know this has already been said, but if BMW names this anything other than an M1 (especially something as awkward as what they did to the Z4), they can kiss my ass, because my first mod is going to be an M1 badge. And I hope it voids my warranty!!
