just saw an R this morning driving through Artarmon. I love the look (and sound) of the previous two models of R32 and i have to say i thought that the R was really boring. I think people would be hard pressed to know visually it's the big brother of the GTI. I am sure the driving experience is great though.
Out of interest i noticed in this months Motor Mag some guys have started to import the Scirocco R for $79k drive away. NZ spec so i assume the full blown 199kw engine. Good look car but front wheel drive may not be some peoples kettle of fish Greg |

Well after much deliberation over a 2nd hand 135i or a new Golf R, last Friday i made a decision and ordered an R.
I still love the bmw and one day i will get one but the Golf won this time around. It should arrive some time in November... |

Did you drive both? I can read you drove the S3, I mean R20, but nowhere that you drove a 1'er.

I was recently faced with the same decision and I ended up choosing the 135 mainly because I had driven one before and I really did miss those 2 turbos of goodness Golf R does look nice though.

Yeah i know it;s going to feel like an eternity...
Specs are: Rising Blue, 5 dr, DSG, Leather, 19" Rims, Sunroof & i-pod connection, things like front and rear parking sensors, Bi Xenon's etc are all standard. Quote:
Firstly the fact that the Golf has 5 doors, i kept telling myself 2 doors would be fine but with 2 young kids i think that eventually it would become a pain. Secondly for the price of a pretty well specced up Golf R i could of really only been able to afford a 2008 135i. That would mean only approx 1 year left of the warranty and on a car i plan on keeping for at least 5 years that may become an issue. Then there was insurance, was getting quotes of double that of the R due to the 135i being a '2dr sports coupe' |

And even then we still have an influx of New Zealanders coming here, must be the wrong demographic

And we aint paying NZ$1.85+ per litre for PULP.
I must admit was over in April for the Wanaka Airshow with a couple of mates and we hired a Prado - just as well it was diesel - so a smidge under NZ$1.20 a litre ;-) Last edited by Lukkyphil; 07-06-2010 at 07:31 PM.. Reason: can't typer fershite |

I received a package in the mail yesterday from VW Australia. It contained a letter inviting me "as someone who was specially selected for the GTI Track Day sessions, to be one of the first to experience the new model R". Also in the box was a personalised "test driver" card on a lanyard.
So, naturally, I called my local dealer and said I'd received this special offer, and that I'd like to organise a test drive. They said that they didn't have any cars in stock, and it could be months before I can test one. Bit of a joke, don't you think? Perhaps VW should have ensured their dealers had enough stock before spending such a fortune on this little marketing exercise. Hopefully they call me back sooner than later as I'm keen to see just how it compares. VW has come a long way, and whilst the Golf is a dime-a-dozen on our roads, it's pretty good bang for your buck.
