I don't get it: ESS are willing to sell/support their flash-at-home tune for the N54 cars (including the 'is' models) to people outside US and claim it will work with these cars...

Can't blame them for being careful. They can't really get a EU car to their shop in Utah to really test thoroughly. It doesn't take much to turn a given community irreversibly sour to a particular product, no matter how fundamentally sound the concept is. One marginal tune could blow the market for them.

With luck, they'll eventually release end-user tuning tools and we can get together and share our tuning techniques and maps across regions.

I have a lot of respect for them not going the route of "email tuning."

For those who wanted to catch a glimpse of the tables and such, Lance has just made a new thread:

Very informative, and if anyone has any further questions, feel free to ask as the Calibration team has notification of that particular thread.

does Cobb offer a free trial period?

Very interested, just not certain if it's what I want for everyday use.

1trip5,

We don't offer a free trial period, but we do offer a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. If you are unsatisfied with the performance and/or functionality of the AccessPORT, you can return it to us within 30 days in an unmarried state for a full refund.

If you choose to purchase the AccessPORT through one of our dealers, make sure you discuss their return policy with them regarding the AccessPORT. We can't force our dealers to comply with this policy, but many of them do.

Thanks,

Gary

Just picked up an Accessport from Danny at the so-cal shop. Unfortunately I got the "vehicle not supported" warning, so my ROM has been sent to the guys in texas.

Keep you posted on some impressions once I get it installed!

Just out of interest, what happens if someone outside the US tries to install a cobb tune on their overseas model car? Will it come up with that ROM not supported message?

I'm just trying to figure out how ESS manages to sell a flash at home worldwide for all N54 equipped cars. I'm guessing it simply overwrites the OEM software with their own and it really doesnt matter where the car is from since all the vehicle's hardware is identical anyway....and the ECU compensates automatically for small variances in temperature and fuel quality anyway.

Since Cobb isnt making a product suited to cars outside the USA (I like many others *was* really excited by Cobb coming into the market) I am looking at pulling the pin on the ESS version, but just need to know how they have been able to cater for all cars around the world so easily and quickly....

Question

I've got a quick question...Dinan likes to go on and on about tweaking the oil pump and water pump to handle the extra power from their tunes, which are basically reflashes.

I realize that from a performance standpoint, playing with these values isn't going to net you any additional power, but I'm curious if COBB has tweaked any of these values? From a longetivity standpoint, I would think it would be worthwhile, no?

ESS is a good company and they have been tuning BMW's for a long time. Probably longer then anyone in the states. However, they are expensive and I have heard that their handheld unit is not a robust as Cobb Tuning.

Also, they charge about $500 for each tune that you purchase which seems very expensive to me.

They tuned my E46 M3 and it was okay. Very difficult to compare an NA tune to a FI tune.

I decided to go with the Cobb tune because I feel like their overall product is probably better then ESS. I also had a bad experience with ESS where they lost my DME for about 2 weeks. I won't go into details but I was very pissed because I did not have my car for 2 weeks.

IMO Cobb is trying to put together the best tune that they can for the N54. That engine is their entire focus at this point for BMW's. It is great for those of us who own a car with this wonderful engine.

ESS tunes every car that BMW makes so I doubt that they have spent as much time on this engine as Cobb has.

So, I purchase the Cobb tune and should receive it tomorrow. I look forward to getting it installed and having Topspeed in Atlanta custom tune my car when their pro tuner becomes available later this year.

That is another thing, ESS doesn't offer their tuning software to any other vendors. I like that Cobb has given us all an option to get a custom tune at local shops.

I have the JB3 and I'm using the map 3 all the days. It's approximatly the same results that AccessPort stage 1...

Only for tell you that the N54 Engine in "stage1" is very comfortable to ride every day. No more fuel consuption, no problem, no "too violent"... But at the same time, if you want, the engine can give you more power, more enjoy! Very good!

I hope it's almost so good (and better...) with the AccessPort.

So, I think you can install it, for 100% satisfaction!

Just thought I'd throw my $.02
I just had my AP installed and dyno'd and thought I'd share my experience with them.
The guy's at Austin Cobb are very good at what they do. Robb is very meticulous and treaded my car like a surgeon. Yes, its expensive..yes, its new to the BMW tuning world. But, after the numbers I put down I am convinced Cobb is the best choice for people like me who have a stock daily driver and want more without taking any chances of losing the smoothness of the drive. I won't post numbers, as Robb wanted to review the data and will be posting it soon.

The AccessPORT is able to identify the ROM that is on the ECU, if it does not match a supported ROM, it will not install. Basically it looks for a list of identifiers for a given platform. If those identifiers don't match, the AccessPORT does not install.

If the car is of the same manufacturer there is a good chance an unknown ROM message will occur and it will allow the customer to try to acquire the ECU data (ROM dump).

However, we are concentrating on USDM vehicles at this time. There is no danger of damaging your vehicle by trying to install the AccessPORT on an unsupported vehicle, but we will be unable to add support at this time.
