BMW brake squeal service information

I got this from my SA. Not sure if this is a repost but at least it is informative.

My impression:

Yeah, squeaky breaks are embarrassing and annoying but they work so deal with it and suck it up.

After a little over a year of driving I have yet to ever hear the brakes squeal *knocks on wood*

I am also used to Brembo brakes as I had them for quite some time on my STi. You just cannot use the brakes lightly (read: barely riding the brakes when slowing down). It glazes the pads and removes the embedded pad material on the rotor which will make you have to bed them in again.

Cliff Notes version: Mean it when you brake with Brembos.

mine squueal here in the winter... and by winter I mean occasional streaks of -40 weather... and by -40 I mean both fahrenheit and celsius... so... yeah they squeal but so what? the car still runs and that's enough in those conditions haha

otherwise they're fine... break dust? different story... they say you can only get 2 out of 3: break dust, performance, and noise... manufacturers have to choose.

Heh, pretty typical response from a German company. "We engineered it, so it was engineered right. If it isn't working, it's because you're doing it wrong." Along the lines of "if your HPFP died, it's because you filled up with gas from the wrong station."

LOL - Mine squealed a couple times - dealer said to take it to 130mph then lay into the brakes. Should resolve.

Late brakers and commuter freeway drivers are more susceptible to squealing brakes. Proper pad and rotor break in greatly reduces the chances of squealing.

gonna try this attempt.. mine squeal when i come to a stop.. but if i come to the same stop and apply brakes lightly a bit earlier before stop i dont have issue of squeeling.. So hard braking or very soft braking is when i dont have squeeling..

anyone know when a good time to change rotors and/or pads? or how i can check when my time is coming soon?

See "Service Requirements" in your owners manual to learn how to access that info through the dash computer or iDrive. Est. miles or Km. remaining on front & rear brakes may then be read.

My dealer replaced the pads and rotors because of the sqeak. The new ones squeak even worse that the originals. WTF??? Was just told, there's nothing wrong with them. If they keep squeaking when the weather gets warmer, bring it back in again. Wow! Never had a problem with my 2011 335i, but this 2010 135i has been hell on my ears.

Bed-in the pads/rotors. Brakes will squeal when in abrasive friction and not adherent

Yeah, mine have been squealing for 2 years. Really annoying for a street pad.
