1M Crooked Exhaust

For the 1M owners on the forum can you please eye-ball something for me.

If you stand directly behind the 1m, roughly 1-2 feet back at the dead center of the roundel, take a look at the exhaust tips as they protrude from the back of the rear defuser.

On my vehicle the right tips project further out than the left tips.

Can other owners confirm this?

Wrong angle. He is saying when you stand behind the car and look DOWN at the exhaust pipes - they stick out uneven from the rear valence/bumper cover.

even from this pic, you can see the passengers side is slightly lower and looks like it sticks out just a tad more but it could just be the pic

from my experience w/ other dual exhaust cars in the past (non-BMW), they tend not to be perfectly symmetrical.

Are you talking about an angle that they stick out in, rapter or are they straight and stick out more on the right than they do on the left? So looking top down, yours look like this?

Thanks for the clarification

I am actually saying that they stick out straight but the right tips project slightly further than the left tips do.

The angle appears to be fine.

ON a car i have access to, i see no real difference when looking down directly..

phone pics.. sorry thats all i got.

the first pic is the drivers side ( usa) second is passanger side (usa)

i was a little more directly over the drivers side when taking pic, but i saw no difference.. maybe if you wanna be really anal less than a mm.. in all directions.


EDIT >>>>> I TAKE IT ALL BACK... it was dark where it was parked

it was brought inside.. the right side does stick out further then the left... 3 or 4 mm at best.. manufacturing tolerance i guess ??? not really noticable espically since most peoples view of theses pipes will be as they pull away from them at a very high rate of speed

So... just re-checked.

If I stand dead center, directly behind the car and then move back until I see the exhaust tips, then I will see the right tips before I see the left tips. I would say there is a 2-3mm difference. Nothing I would have noticed otherwise, though.

I have seen some other pics of the car on the net today and I see the same thing that I am seeing on my car.

You are correct the difference is about 5mm, but really I don't think that I care all that much... curiosity more than anything else.

I should take a peek under the vehicle to see if there is a mechanical connection on the tips so that they can be pulled back slightly.

It would be a good time to do it as the car is still really clean.

On a side note: I think that I would be very happy if these tips are removable as I would promptly send them to be powder-coated black!

I noticed that the same day I picked up the car. It's not a huge deal for me as it will be coming off soon.

If they are spot welded then there will be a little bit of an ordeal to remove them .

Thinking about it, I don't know that having a threaded connection at this part/ point of the vehicle would be a smart move. The weather conditions would without a doubt seize the threads and make removing it impossible.

They look (from the pictures I've seen), exactly like the M3 tips, which are simple attached via rivets. The rivets also look accessible without removal of the exhaust or rear bumper

Mine are straight and even. Perhaps the heating up and down has loosened yours. I only have 320 miles on mine.

I'm with this 100%...2 of my friends one who drives a 1-series and another who drives a 3-series, both experience expansion and contraction of the exhaust tips depending on how hot their cars run. I've seen it with my own eyes, and they can expand up to 0.5-1 inch!
