Winter tire 1m discussion

I would like to start the winter tire discussion on this thread. Specifically for those in the north who will likey not be putting the car out in 4-6 inches of snow but still would like to cruise in the and on the cold asphalt.


Personally I would like to know/ share information on what rims and tires are available for this beast in 6-8 months.

I am looking to get 18" rims with the offset pattern similar to what has come with the vehicle. 17" would be ideal ... But I don't know if I will clear the calipers

The Calculations for offset that I have been able to make using 1010tires.com is the following:

The object in these cases is to be able to use the same stock tire sizes of 245 front/ 265 rear with different aspect ratios to accomplish the same offset.

Using the stock set of
9.0 wide x 19" x 31mm offset (Front)
10.0 wide x 19" x 25mm offset (Rear)


Offset Calculation for 8.5 front and 10 rear in an 18" diameter:

Front - 8.5" wide x 18" x 25mm offset - this will keep the outside face of the wheel in its' current position and the inside face of the wheel (the part closer to the center of the car) will retract by 12mm

Front - 8.0" wide x 18" x 18mm - this will keep the outside face the same and the inside face will retract by 26mm

Rear - 9.5" wide x 18" x 19mm - this will keep the outside face the same and retract 12mm on the inside

Rear - 10" wide x 18" x 25mm - These dimensions will remain unchanged from the stock configuration as the wheel width is the same.

The Tires:

Stock Tires Read as follows:
245/35 R19 Front
265/35 R19 Rear

Using an 18" Winter tire to obtain the minimal loss of rotational speed using the following:
245/40/18 = 0.1% too FAST (Traveling at 60mph = 59.9mph in reality)
265/40/18 = 0.2% too SLOW (Traveling at 60mph = 60.1mph in reality)

235/40/18 = 1.4% too FAST (Traveling at 60mph = 59.2mph in reality)
245/45/18 = 1.4% too SLOW (Traveling at 60mph = 60.9mph in reality)

This is something I've been wondering about in the back of my mind. Specifically, what rims and what tire size choices are there?

Tirerack isn't listing any winter tire & wheel combos for the 1M (perhaps because summer is upon us?).

Whatever fits the M3 should work, so search for M3 winter setups at tirerack.

Personally I am leaning towards 18" Blizzaks. I don't think you can fit 17" wheels around the brakes.

Here in Germany BMW offers a winter tire package (Code ZPY IIRC) which uses the Michelin winter tires in a square setup, there was a thread on it before...

It's just me--but, if I owned a 1M, it wouldn't be out during winter. My humble 128 is tucked away December-February. My Focus takes care of winter, with the Blizzaks on.

That was my plan all along. Your plan may be different, but the thought of a 1M pulling through snow, slush, and slop, along with the attendant washing issues was never on my radar. But, hey, that's me. I'm sure that the above snow tire plans would work out for you, given the 1M's M3 suspension heritage.

Drillslinger--Here's hoping BMW brings the 1M to military sales. Can't think of anyone who would deserve such a sweet ride any more than you!

I was waiting for someone to start this one. Gil at TireRack told me they would figure out a preferred winter package when they get their hands on one to test. I would really like to stick with a staggered setup.

Does anyone know the offsets etc. yet? I saw some black M6 18" wheels online that I thought would look cool. And they were cheap.

I live in Canada (think Minnesota winter), and will be travelling mostly on major highways in wintertime. Unfortunately, I may be able to report back on how the front spoiler functions as a plough.

I'm pretty sure the wheels are the exact same ones that are on the M3 Comp. so whatever those are...

Snow tires or not I would avoid driving this car in the snow at all cost.

I am actually thinking of putting 235/45/18 all around... .1% difference with back and 2.2% front.
45 profile makes for a cheaper tire.

I'm not intending on going out in the snow (got a Landrover Defender for that!) but I am looking for winter tires that have more grip at cold temperatures.

I prefer to keep the standard M359 wheels (actually I'm thinking of buying another set) and am just looking for winter tires to fit them.

Trouble is, it doesn't look like there's much choice out there in those sizes.

I've been running Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance Winters for winters, they are amazing tires, they are better in the dry than my stock run-flats!

That's what I did and bought a set of M359 and will put the Vredestein Wintrac Extreme on them sizes 245/35/19 in front and 275/30/19 behind.
The tires run one winter on the e60 so they're kinda new and did great.

Oke the e60 weighs more but it also had 600nm torque

I used 245/35/19 & 255/35/19 Wintrac Xtremes on my e90 m3 last winter - they were very, very good. Put them on a second set of OEM 19" M3 alloys.

What did you pay those wheels in belgium?

Does anybody know why BMW is putting 265 tires on a 19x10" wheel? The tires appear undersized to me, I would think (as GS poses) you could fit 275 or even 285 on the standard 1M rims, no? My sincere apologies if I'm talking crap here

Anyway, my plan for an extra set of rims was to buy gunmetal Advan RS's, sized 18x9 and 18x10 or 18x8.5 and 18x9.5.
My dot-spec track tires on those rims would be 255 and 275/285.
And for winter use (maybe in two years or so, for now I'm good with my audi A3) I thought of 235/245 and 255/265.

Can anyone tell me about the possibilities here? Am I dreaming or is this possible. I really want track wheels, but I feel absurd buying 2 extra sets of wheels...

It's not that different from the 135i and with proper rubber, snow's no problem.

The moto safety car has the 265/F-285/R setup. So it shouldn't be a problem

Thanks for info everyone. I'm leaning towards the Dunlop Wintersport 3D, on whatever decent-looking wheels that fit. Preferably 18" staggered, unless the experts say otherwise. Don't think I will be able to avoid driving it in the winter. If some people drive a 911 in the winter, then I should have no problem driving a 1M.
