I just did this by disconnecting the plug in the trunk. Works with no errors so far. Noticeable difference in sound at lower RPMs with the window open, can't tell a difference with the window closed. Overall very happy for the 5 minutes it took.

My young neighbors from Germany asked if my exhaust was stock, I said yes but they looked puzzled, and all I did was stick a golf tee in a hose.

I know that when some design exhausts and headers......they lenghten/shorten the tubes, use larger/smaller diameters...etc to get gains in certain areas.
So I ask...does the flap open and close under certain loads, rpm's and such or does it stay closed at low rpm's then open above that with no effect on other gains? I just wonder if doing the mod you might loose out a smidge somewhere else like low end torque and just gaining sound. |

Finally got around to doing this mod last night. I tried 3/16 vacuum line caps and they were too big. However, 5/32 worked perfectly on my 2009. Took me less than a minute once I got the right sizes. Anyway great little mod. Gives the car a nice deep sound below 3000 rpm. I should have done it a long time ago.
BTW I decided to use the vacuum line caps and plug rather than the zip tie because I didn't want to cause the line to crack or split in case I want to go back to stock. With the caps and plug it will be easy to reconnect later if I decide to do so.

I have a 135is, which means I have the PE. I definitely hear some metal rattling when I start the car or am moving at slow speeds/low RPMs. If I don't have a flap, what am I hearing?
Edit: It sounds EXACTLY like this: (0:39 and 0:43)

Where is the plug in the trunk? I don't see it under the left light bulb access cover. Do you need to remove or move the entire left side liner to gain access? Just want to confirm before I start pulling the center edge cover to lift this up.

It's behind the left side liner. Not hard to get too if you remove the fasteners. There is a link someplace in this thread that has some pics of the connector.

Why so many different answers??
I have been reading about this mod for almost 2 years and never got around to trying it, mostly because each answer or post has a different comment about ECU codes, no ECU codes, Golf Tee, Zip Ties, Under Car, Trunk, this, that and the other.
I really want this mod not for louder exhaust or better performance, but to stop the clacking of the flapper when I am driving with the windows down. It is so loud, especially when I am driving through a tunnel, that I am really surprised BMW didn't add some type of damper to quiet the actuation. I can hear it when I am slowing down to make turns too, so basically it is just driving me nuts and today I took a look at the threads again and peeked at the car. My solution might be covered in other threads but I couldn't find what I did, so here goes... And I am open to comments as well. Instead of jacking up the car I did the mod in the trunk. But I didn't pull the wire as other have done, which may or may not throw a code. I pulled and capped the muffler vacuum line from the valve. Vacuum caps are easy to get at any auto parts store for cheap. The vacuum line with the yellow is the one to pull - see picture. This way the computer has all connections, the vacuum lines are all attached and it is super easy to reverse. Also, since it is in the trunk you don't really have to worry about plugging up the open line or tie anything up. I was tempted to cap off the vacuum line in the engine compartment where the line feeds from (there's a Tee on the diver's side) but that is my next experiment. This would avoid any future vacuum leak issues and since this line also feeds the brake booster might be a better idea. |

I recently did this via my trunk, found the below diagram useful. Shows exactly how you are impacting the actuator, seems like the trunk method as indicated in the post above is the most efficient way.

I did this little mod today. I believe BMW added this flapper to prevent hwy drone. At 60-75 mph the car now has a low and annoying drone. Not my thing.

I'm a "get off my lawn" type when it comes to drone. Hunted it down in every form and targeted it for termination with extreme prejudice. Never noticed any drone from the Golf-Tee mod. Any other exhaust mods or perhaps you don't have the BT box in the trunk?

Ended up undoing this mod. Always seemed unhealthy during cold startup and the flange always made vibration noises at idle.

I pulled the connector in the trunk a couple of weeks ago. No issues at all and I swear the car feels quite noticeably stronger in the low end. Probably just fooling myself, but it truly does!

I might do the zip tie method because I have those things lying around all over the place, but what did you use to plug the actuator?
