83 22 0 309 031 is MTF-LT-2 trans fluid. Yup, it is the wrong stuff! Welcome to the "club" bro! I did a quick google search and found it on a German M3 forum... http://de.bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/83220309031/ |

Aargh!
Dackelone
Thanks for doing what I should have! Nuts. In answer to whomever asked about dealer, it was Motorwerks in Barrington, IL and was the service tech (Jerry) that I used for my E9x M3 sedan; course, I didn't warn him, only the rep, Eliot, but I guess I didn't look credible!? I think I must have been awakened when you found the answer!! |

I am planning to have a "meeting" first with the service manager with the presence of the head tech. And when they will say they have the fluids etc. I am going to see them first before leaving the car for draining. Plus, I am seriously considering to stay around when they are doing the job and check it with my own eyes. Let them call me OCD, who cares!

To be honest i dont know what could go wrong, after all it's only 5000 km with the same fluid that's been used in a lot of BMW cars. |

Run in service...
I think my dealership got it right. No trans fluid change (I will pay for that out of pocket during my next oil change). Can anyone confirm that the part #s below are correct?

At dealer for 1200 mile run-in. I had given them the service bullitin regarding the rear diff and they got the right stuff in. They showed me the bottles.
Fortunately, I has a conversation with the SA regarding the MTF, because their checklist still said to change it. The tech questioned him about it, but did not drain the tranny because he has already told him that he would only be doing engine and diff oils. Funny thing is, they verified for me that out tranny does NOT have a magnetic drain plug (even more reason to flush the tranny fluid after break-in, IMHO). Could they know that without removing the plug? I plan to have the tranny fluid changed as soon as the MTF LT5 is available for them to order. |

My dealer verified that none of the 4 part numbers for the LT5 are available for order from BMWNA or in the stock of any US dealers. They are going to look into special order from Germany. I want the tranny flushed, even if BMWNA has decided it is not needed.

Just got a call from my SA: BMW uses a "virtual warehouse" for this fluid, and it has been ordered directly from the manufacturer. They will have it in 4 days. This may be noted in this thread already (I have not read all 15 pages), but thought this may be useful information. I will post an update once I see the stuff and verify that it is the real thing.
I told them I want the manual tranny fluid changed even if I have to pay for it . . . we'll see if they charge or not. |
