It depends on the State, so look into it beforehand. I believe some states like Florida (I think) charge full sales tax whereas others (Like Alabama) don't charge sales tax if the vehicle has been previously registered.
I didn't have to pay sales tax on the MINI because it had been registered with USAREUR for 6 months prior to shipping it to the States (Plus, I got to ship it on my orders)

It's not income tax that you need to worry about. Depending on the state where the car is registered you will probably have sales and/or property taxes, plus registration and title costs. There are exceptions, but check the state before you assume anything.

Certain states apply a property tax on non real estate property. My last lease in Montgomery County Texas cost about $800 per year as I recall.

I know that it sounds silly, but some places charge a recurring property tax on non-real estate property. Yes that tax man commeth.
